Digital tabulation of geologic and hydrologic data from wells in the northern San Francisco Bay region, northern California

Downhole lithologic information and aquifer pumping test data are reported from 464 wells from a broad area of the northern part of the Coast Ranges in California. These data were originally published in paper form as numerous tables within three USGS Water-Supply Papers describing geology and groundwater conditions in Napa and Sonoma Valleys, the Santa Rosa and Petaluma Valley areas, and in the Russian River Valley and areas in Sonoma and Mendocino Counties, Calif. The well data are compiled in this report in digital form suitable for use in a digital mapping environment. These data, although mostly from relatively shallow water wells, provide important subsurface information that displays the disposition and facies transition of lithologic units throughout this broad area. Well lithologic data themselves and simple three-dimensional interpolation of those data show distinct spatial patterns that are linked to subsurface stratigraphy and structure and can be used to aid in the assessment of the groundwater resources.

Availability of Ground-Water Data for California, Water Year 1997

The Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with Federal, State, and local water agencies, obtains a large amount of data pertaining to the ground-water resources of California each water year. These data constitute a valuable data base for developing an improved understanding of the water resources of the State. Beginning with the 1985 water year and continuing through 1993, these data were published in a report series entitled 'Water Resources Data for California, Volume 5. Ground-Water Data.' Prior to the introduction of this series, historical ground-water information was published in U.S. Geological Survey Water-Supply Papers. In 1994, the Volume 5 Ground-Water Data report was discontinued, but data continue to be available in our data bases. This Fact Sheet serves as an index to ground-water data for 1997. The 2-page report contains a map of California showing the number of wells (by county) with available water-level and water-quality data for the current water year (fig. 2) and instructions for obtaining this and other ground-water information contained in the data bases of the Water Resources Division, California District.

Saline waters in New York State, Long Island, Staten Island and Manhattan, and upstate New York

In connection with studies of the practicability of conversion of saline water to fresh water, the U. S. Geological Survey assembled data on the occurrence, distribution, quantity, and chemical quality of saline waters as of 1955 for a report entitled, "Preliminary survey of the saline water resources of the United States" to be released when completed as a U. S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1374. This report comprises data for New York State. Saline water is defined herein as any mixture of fresh and salt water having more than 1,000 parts per million (ppm) of dissolved solids. In the Nation as a whole there are, of course, all gradations of salinity from 1,000 ppm up to the 30,000 to 35,000 ppm characteristic of sea water, and the even higher salinities of certain natural brines. Sea water, and other water of comparable salinity, will be referred to here as "sea water" or "high-chloride water". This report contains two parts: one for Long Island, Staten Island, and Manhattan, N. Y., and the other for Upstate New York. Figure 1 shows the locations of the places named and important occurrences of saline water in and near Long Island. Tables 1 and 2 list, respectively, well data and chemical analyses for selected wells in Long Island, Staten Island, and Manhattan, N. Y.; tables 3 and 4 list, respectively, well data and chemical analyses for selected wells in Upstate New York. For many samples, only the chloride concentration and not the total dissolved solids has been determined. However, it is safe to assume that the total dissolved solids in natural water are substantially in excess of 1,000 ppm where the chloride is at or nearly at this concentration.

Deep‐well salinity‐exploration

One of the outstanding accomplishments of recent years in connection with the study of the geologic source of groundwater and the quality of water yielded by different formations has been the development of methods and equipment for the exploration of wells. The description and use of the deep ‐ well current‐meter on well ‐ exploration work in Hawaii and New Mexico has already appeared in published literature (John McCombs and A. G. Fiedler, Methods of exploring and repairing leaky artesian wells, U.S. Geol. Sur. Water‐Supply Paper 596, pp. 1–32, 1928) on hydrology but recent developments in the application of electrical conductivity‐measurements for determining the salinity of water in wells have not heretofore been presented. In addition to being of considerable scientific importance in connection with problems of ground‐water hydrology, the practical value of locating the place at which salt water is entering a well and contaminating a potable water‐supply is great. Such information may be the means of preventing the loss of large investments in industries, irrigation‐projects, and cities that are dependent upon well ‐water supplies that may at some time become contaminated by salty or other highly mineralized water.

Flood of August 1-6, 1950, at Wichita Falls, Texas

Floods occurred on streams in the vicinity of Wichita Falls, Tex., during the period Aug. 1-6, 1950, as a result of heavy rains falling immediately southwest of the city on August 1, 1950. Serious flooding occurred along Holliday Creek in the city, necessitating the evacuation of about five hundred families from the low areas; however, no loss of life was reported. The total direct damage to residential and industrial property was estimated by-Corps of Engineers, U. S. Army, to be $291,500. No estimate was available, but crop and soil losses in the rural areas were probably very high. The purpose of this report is to present certain rainfall and runoff data in the flood area in greater detail than is usually found in regular Water-Supply Papers. The report contains a summary of peak discharges at six points, and d~tailed records of discharge during the flood period at five points in the vicinity of Wichita Falls. The report also contains a discussion of rainfall associated with the flood and a description of the general features of the flood.
