Geologic interpretation of seismic data, relocation of Route 3: cut, stations 364-382 in Billerica, Mass.

Geologic and seismic studies were made of this site in October 1951, primarily for the purpose of obtaining data what would aid in establishing a grade for the proposed highway. A report on the geology of the site together with the interpretation of the seismic data that were obtained at this time was submitted by James E. Maynard and Robert M. Haslewood (file report of October 1952). Additional seismic work was performed at this site in Maroh 1953; Mr. M. E. Chandler, Engineer, Massachusetts Department of Public Works, operated seismic equipment at this time. This later work was done to obtain information that would augment the data of the preliminary survey sufficiently to permit estimates to be made of the quantities of materials to be excavated from the cut. This report contains the geologic interpretation of the supplementary seismic data that were obtained during the Maroh 1953 survey. The work was perfromed as a part of a cooperative project of the Massachusetts Department of Public Works and the United States Geological Survey.

Progress report on selected ground-water basins in Utah

This technical publication consists essentially of the interpretation of data collected in connection with a detailed inventory of ground-water pumpage and water-level trends in four irrigation districts in southern Utah. Much of this information was assembled in a preliminary report entitled "Inventory of ground-water pumpage in three irrigation districts in southern Utah," by H. A. Waite and others, and was used by the State Engineer in a court hearing in Parowan in February 1954.

Summary of results from electromagnetic and galvanic soundings on Kilauea Iki lava lake, Hawaii

The purpose of this report is to summarize various electrical sounding studies made on the Kilauea Iki lava lake and to present some of the preliminary interpretations that resulted from the measurements. The following discussion is not intended as a complete interpretation, but is intended to summarize the major points made in an invited oral presentation at the American Geophysical Union fall meeting held in San Francisco, Calif. on December 6, 1976. This paper was part of a group of papers dealing with various geophysical studies recently made on the Kilauea Iki lava lake. A general plan map of Kilauea Iki lava lake is shown in figure 1. Electromagnetic (EM) loop-loop soundings, D.C. resistivity soundings, and VLF apparent resistivity measurements were made on the lave lake surface. All of these surveys were made to determine the geoelectric structure of the lava lake and to determine parameters of the molten basaltic lens that exist in the partially solidified lava lake.

South Carolina seismic program seismological data report, July 1975-June 1977

The purpose of this data report is to collect and distribute preliminary data acquired from a network of seismic stations (Tarr and King, 1974) in order to facilitate current studies of earthquake occurrence. Record interpretation, data processing, and collation of hypocenter data and related-event parameters are performed by the U.S. Geological Survey, Golden, Colorado. This compilation is preliminary and is subject to later revisions on the basis of current research.

Pallid sturgeon in the Lower Mississippi Region: Hematology and genome information

This project (Project 1448-43270-2M-002) has been coordinated through the Natchitoches National Fish Hatchery (NNFH) and the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC). From November 2001 to April 2002, over 280 sturgeon of the genus Scaphirhynchus (including pallid sturgeon, shovelnose, and their hybrids) were sampled from the outflow channel of the Old River Control Structure Complex (ORCC) in Concordia Parish, La. In the overall project, several datasets were collected (see Appendix), including species identification by using microsatellites and morphometric characters, food habits, physical anomalies, information on blood cells, and pathologic evidence of iridovirus – the first indication in the lower Mississippi population of pallid sturgeon. In this study, data on blood cells were obtained from the sturgeon collected monthly from approximately 20 different animals at each sampling time. This report presents preliminary information on differential blood cell identifications in sturgeon, data on comparative genomic DNA content and DNA degradation, and summaries and interpretations of data collected in light of available scientific literature addressing blood parameters of fish and sturgeon, in particular. Results obtained from collection and examination of blood and body fluids are often essential in establishing the health of fish (Blaxhall, 1972; Fange, 1992). Blood cells and sperm cells can be obtained nondestructively from fishes, even from small specimens that weigh less than 100 g (Stoskopf, 1992a). For flow cytometry assays, whereby cells are analyzed individually in a fluid stream, less than 1 :L of blood is needed. Examinations of blood by microscopy and flow cytometry were performed at NWRC in assisting in the efforts directed at recovery of the pallid sturgeon population in the Lower Mississippi River Basin.

Geology of Badlands National Park: A preliminary report

Badlands National Park is host to perhaps the most scenic geology and landscape features in the Western Interior region of the United States. Ongoing erosion that forms the "badlands" exposes ancient sedimentary strata of Late Cretaceous through Oligocene age. Quaternary erosional and depositional processes are responsible for most of the modern landscape features in the park and surrounding region. This report provides a basic overview of the park geology The discussions presented within include both well-established concepts and theories and new, preliminary data and interpretations. Much emphasis is placed on presenting information about the oldest and least studied rocks in the park (particularly the Late Cretaceous and earliest Tertiary deposits that underlie the White River beds throughout the park region). Rock formations and selected fossils they contain are described. Faults, folds, unconformities, and other geologic structures in the North Unit of the park are illustrated, including features associated with the Sage Creek anticline and fault system.

Well construction information, lithologic logs, water level data, and overview of research in Handcart Gulch, Colorado: An alpine watershed affected by metalliferous hydrothermal alteration

Integrated, multidisciplinary studies of the Handcart Gulch alpine watershed provide a unique opportunity to study and characterize the geology and hydrology of an alpine watershed along the Continental Divide. The study area arose out of the donation of four abandoned, deep mineral exploration boreholes to the U.S. Geological Survey for research purposes by Mineral Systems Inc. These holes were supplemented with nine additional shallow holes drilled by the U.S. Geological Survey along the Handcart Gulch trunk stream. All of the holes were converted into observation wells, and a variety of data and samples were measured and collected from each. This open-file report contains: (1) An overview of the research conducted to date in Handcart Gulch; (2) well location, construction, lithologic log, and water level data from the research boreholes; and (3) a brief synopsis of preliminary results. The primary purpose of this report is to provide a research overview as well as raw data from the boreholes. Interpretation of the data will be reported in future publications. The drill hole data were tabulated into a spreadsheet included with this digital open-file report.
