Fifteenth Annual report of the United States Geological Survey to the Secretary of the Interior, 1893-1894

The work of the Geological Survey is performed under the direction of the Secretary of the Interior. At the beginning of each fiscal year a plan of operations for such year is prepared by the Director, and laid before the Secretary. This, if approved by him, becomes in effect the general order for the year's work. The plan of operations for the fiscal year 1893—'94 was submitted by the Director to the honorable the Secretary of the Interior, May 4, 1893, and was approved by him June 16, 1893. The following is that plan as approved, in accordance with which the work covered by this report was performed.

Twenty-fifth annual report of the director of the United States Geological Survey, 1903-1904

The United States Geological Survey was created by an act of Congress that was approved on March 3, 1879, so that March 3, 1904, may be said to have marked the twenty-fifth year of its existence. There was recently issued by the Survey, partly in recognition of the quarter-century anniversary, a bulletin (No. 227) describing its origin, development, organization, and operations, and it will not be inappropriate to quote here, in this twenty-fifth annual report, a few paragraphs of that publication.

Twenty-seventh annual report of the Director of the United States Geological Survey

During the last fiscal year the character of the work and the organization of the force remained substantially the same as described in the Twenty-sixth Annual Report. Accounts of the work performed in geology and paleontology, chemistry and physics, topography and geography, and hydrography, hydrology, and hydro-economics, as well as in the lines of publication and administration, will be found on later pages. Appropriations and allotments .--A plan of operations, including an itemized statement of the appropriations, amounting to $1,513,482.30, and the allotments thereof, was approved by the Secretary of the Interior on May 15, 1905. The work of the year conformed to this plan, copies of which are on file at the Department and the Survey. State cooperation .--Many of the States, following a well-established policy, cooperated with the National Survey in geologic, topographic, and hydrographic work; details are given on pages 12, 29, 72, and 74.

Thirty-eighth annual report of the Director of the United States Geological Survey

The appropriations for the work of the United States Geological Survey for the fiscal year 1916-17 comprised items amounting to $1,605,520. The plan of operations as approved by the Secretary of the Interior included geologic surveys in the United States and Alaska, reconnaissance and detailed, of 40,937 square miles, topographic surveys of 32,245 square miles, stream gaging at 1,197 stations, the classification of public lands to an amount of more than 18,000,000 acres, and the collection of statistics of production and consumption from more than 90,000 producers, covering more than 75 mineral products. During the year 203 scientific and economic reports were published, and at the end of the year the Survey members holding appointments from the Secretary numbered 934, an increase of 62.

Thirty-ninth annual report of the Director of the United States Geological Survey

The appropriations for the work of the United States Geological Survey for the fiscal year 1917-18 comprised items amounting to $1,750,520. The plan of operations as approved by the Secretary of the Interior contemplated surveys and investigations in the United States and Alaska designed mainly to obtain information or to encourage activities essential to the rapid and successful prosecution of the war. The results of the work are reported in detail in the following pages.

Forty-third annual report of the Director of the United States Geological Survey

The direct appropriations for the work under the Geological Survey for the fiscal year 1922 comprised items amounting to $1,614,349. In addition $140,000, to be disbursed under the direction of the Public Printer, was appropriated for printing the reports of the Survey, and allotments of $10,000 and $7,423.96 for miscellaneous printing and binding and for miscellaneous supplies, respectively, were made from Interior Department appropriations.

Forty-fourth annual report of the Director of the United States Geological Survey

The direct appropriations for the work under the Geological Survey for the fiscal year 1922 comprised items amounting to $1,450,940. In addition $119,000, to be disbursed under the direction of the Public Printer, was appropriated for printing the reports of the Survey, and allotments of $8,000 and $5,050.93 for miscellaneous printing and binding and miscellaneous supplies, respectively, were made from Interior Department appropriations.
