Regionalization in geology by multivariate classification

The concept of multivariate classification of "geological objects" can be combined with the concept of regionalized variables to yield a procedure for typification of geological objects, such as rock units, well records, or samples. Numerical classification is followed by subdivision of the area of investigation, and culminates in a regionalization or mapping of the classification onto the plane. Regions are subdivisions of the map area which are spatially contiguous and relatively homogeneous in their geological properties. The probability of correct classification of each point within a region as being part of that region can be assessed in terms of Bayesian probability as a space-dependent function. The procedure is applied to subsurface data from western Kansas. The geologic properties used are quantitative variables, and relationships are expressed by Mahalanobis' distances. These functions could be replaced by other metrics if qualitative or binary data derived from geological descriptions or appraisals were included in the analysis. ?? 1990 International Association for Mathematical Geology.

Geologic assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources of the eastern Great Basin Province, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, and Arizona

Introduction The purpose of the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) National Oil and Gas Assessment is to develop geologically based hypotheses regarding the potential for additions to oil and gas reserves in priority areas of the United States. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recently completed an assessment of the undiscovered oil and gas potential of the Eastern Great Basin Province of eastern Nevada, western Utah, southeastern Idaho, and northwestern Arizona. This assessment is based on geologic principles and uses the total petroleum system concept. The geologic elements of a total petroleum system include hydrocarbon source rocks (source rock maturation, hydrocarbon generation and migration), reservoir rocks (sequence stratigraphy and petrophysical properties), and hydrocarbon traps (trap formation and timing). The USGS used this geologic framework to define one total petroleum system and three assessment units. All three assessment units were quantitatively assessed for undiscovered oil and gas resources.

Geologic map of the Mount Abbot quadrangle, central Sierra Nevada, California

The Mount Abbot quadrangle comprises about 240 square miles of high montane to alpine terrain straddling the Sierra Nevada crest between Fresno and Bishop, California. About three-fourths of the quadrangle lies in the John Muir Wilderness, and the famous John Muir Trail, travelled by thousands of vacationers each summer, crosses the full length of the quadrangle from north to south (Geologic map). The geologic map of this quadrangle is one of a series across the central Sierra Nevada which have been prepared as background for continuing studies of the geologic history and mineral deposits of this majestic mountain range. This brief explanatory text, however, is written primarily for the non geologist vacationer who wants to familiarize himself with the rocks and geologic features of the quadrangle. Included in this explanation are a geologic guide to part of the John Muir Trail, a glossary of geologic terms used in this report, and annotated references to further reading.

Integration of potential-field and digital geologic data for two North American geoscience transects

Two North American contributions to the Global Geoscience Transects Program, the Quebec-Maine-Gulf of Maine transect and the Great Lakes portion of the United States-Canadian Border transect, are among the first to produce digital geology in a form that can be combined with gridded gravity and aeromagnetic data. Maps of shaded relief and color-composite bandpass-filtered potential-field data combined with overlays of digitized geologic contacts and faults reveal significant new geologic information, including the relative thickness of plutons, the structure of poorly exposed or concealed magnetic units, and possible evidence for mineralized ground. Mechanisms for capturing digital geology by use of scanners, commercial geographic information systems (GIS) software packages, and public-domain PC-based software packages are illustrated by examples from these two transects. The digital geology is combined with the potential field data by use of in-house raster-based image-processing software and commercial hardware. Geologic cross sections constructed along the transects may be tested and refined by using 2-D and 2.5-D magnetic- and gravity-modeling software. The integrated data sets ultimately allow construction of 3-D models of the crust within the transects.

Geology and land use in the western part of the Gulf Coast coal-bearing region

This map series is a compilation of the outcrop geology in the U.S. Gulf Coast coal region. The maps show the regional geologic setting for primary coal occurrences and detailed geology and historic mining areas. The CD contains ESRI ArcView SHP files of cities, urban areas, historical mines (points and polygons), counties, current mines, 1:100,000 quadrangle outlines of the study area, fossil fuel powerplants, nuclear powerplants, political boundaries, federally managed lands, roads and railroads in the study area, hydrology in the study area (polygons and arcs), geology nomenclature breaks, geological features (faults), and geology. ArcExplorer is included on the CD.

Geologic map of the Patrick quadrangle, Chesterfield County, South Carolina

The Patrick 7.5 minute quadrangle, located in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, lies entirely within the upper Atlantic Coastal Plain province. Directly to the southeast in the Dovesville quadrangle, the Pliocene Orangeburg Scarp marks the western edge of marine terraces that characterize the upper limit of the middle Atlantic Coastal Plain. The geologic mapping for this quadrangle was done from 2013-2015 by Bradley A. Fitzwater at Old Dominion University as part of a Master’s thesis supervised by G. Richard Whittecar. Christopher S. Swezey (U.S. Geological Survey) and Fitzwater collaborated in the geologic mapping of both the Patrick quadrangle and the adjacent Middendorf quadrangle (Swezey et al., 2021). The geologic mapping was conducted using a lidar base from 2013, whereas this published product shows the geologic data on a USGS topographic map base from 1968. As a result of differences in resolution, the published map may display a few minor discrepancies with respect to alignment of geologic data with topographic and hydrologic features.
