Detailed investigation of a coastal plain-Piedmont fault contact in northeastern Virginia

A trench across the Dumfries fault of the Stafford fault zone near Stafford, Virginia (see Mixon and Newell, 1976) exposed a high-angle reverse fault juxtaposing Paleozoic Quantico Slate and Cretaceous Potomac Group rocks. A system of subsidiary reverse faults and small scale normal faults disrupt the Coastal Plain strata adjacent to the main fault. Cross-cutting relations and stratigraphic details indicate that the subsidiary faults in the Cretaceous rocks document a history of episodic deformation, in part active during accumulation of the Coastal Plain strata. Slickensides and stereo net analysis of theorientation of subsidiary reverse faults, normal faults, and bedding indicate that, through time, faulting consistently included right lateral separation.

Virginia

A comparison of electronic particle counting and pipette techniques in routine mud analysis

Electronic particle counting and pipette size-analysis techniques are compared for their relative effectiveness in large-scale routine mud analysis. Optimum laboratory procedures for conducting electronic analyses with a Model TA Coulter Counter are presented. Comparative electronic and pipette analyses conducted on the same samples resulted in equivalent precision for both techniques. Results of electronic analyses consistently showed size distributions significantly coarser than those obtained by pipette analyses. The laboratory efficiency of the relatively rapid electronic technique is far superior to that of the pipette technique, although more extensive precautionary measures are required to maintain a high level of analytical accuracy and precision. The quality of electronic analyses largely depends upon the effectiveness of standardized operational procedures established within the laboratory.

Large springs in the Valley and Ridge Province in Tennessee

Approximately 2,700 miscellaneous discharge measurements for 171 large springs in 28 counties of East Tennessee, predominantly within the Valley and Ridge physiographic province, were analyzed statistically and results tabulated to summarize data useful to the Appalachian Valleys-Piedmont Regional Aquifer System Analysis study. The number of measurements at each spring ranged from 1 to 65. Information from each spring includes station numbers, latitude, longitude, spring name and where data are sufficient, an estimate of the mean discharge and the discharge exceeded by 75%, 50%, and 25% of the miscellaneous measurements. Data are referenced to locations on a 1:1,000 ,000-scale map. The highest mean spring discharge was 32.2 cu ft/sec (14,5000 gallons/min).

Tennessee

Exploratory water well, St. George Island, Florida

A 1,026-foot well was drilled into the Floridan aquifer on St. George Island in search of a supply of water for residential development in 1971. This is the only well on the island on record to have been drilled below 200 feet for water. The well was abandoned; water flowing from the well was saline. It had a specific conductance of 7,500 micromhos per centimeter at 25° Celsius. The specific conductances of samples taken at drilling depths 217-1,026 feet ranged from 3,140 to 39,600, with the maximum value at 470 ft. A composite geophysical and lithologic log of the well shows spontaneous potential, single-point resistance, gamma-ray, neutron, gamma-gamma, and caliper logs. Well-site notes, a written description of cuttings samples, a graph showing the relation of specific conductance of water samples to the depth of the well at time of sampling, and four chemical analyses of the water are included in the report.

Florida

Estimating aftershock risk for entry into earthquake-damaged buildings

We present a simple method to estimate the risk of experiencing strong shaking from aftershocks during entry into earthquake-damaged buildings. We compute wait times until the probability of strong ground shaking from aftershocks reaches a predefined risk threshold; for example, a 0.4 percent probability of experiencing Modified Mercalli Intensity 7 or greater shaking during the planned building entry. We also develop a relation between aftershock probability and the probability of strong shaking, so that users can reference the U.S. Geological Survey aftershock forecast during an ongoing aftershock sequence to determine if the risk threshold has been met. We apply our method to active continental regions (for example, the Western United States), stable continental regions (for example, the Central and Eastern United States), and subduction zones (for example, Cascadia or Alaska).

Trace elements in some rocks and slag from the Yemen Arab Republic and their bearing on the iron ore near Sa'dah

Thirty-seven samples of rocks, saprolite, laterite, gossan, and slag were collected in the Yemen Arab Republic during June-July 1975 when field work was conducted to refine an interpretation of the regional geology made from LANDSAT-1 images by M. J. Grolier. These samples we reanalyzed in the laboratories of the U. S. Geological Survey, and the results were interpreted for use in programs of economic development as a guide for the evaluation of mineral resources in the Yemen Arab Republic. The work was undertaken as part of the program of the U. S. Agency for International Development with the cooperation of the Mineral and Petroleum Authority, Ministry of Economy, Yemen Arab Republic.

Method for estimating water use and interbasin transfers of freshwater and wastewater in an urbanized basin

Techniques for management of drainage basins that use water budgets to balance available water resources with actual or anticipated water use require accurate and precise estimates of basin withdrawals, interbasin transfers of freshwater, unaccounted-for use, water use, consumptive use, inflow and infiltration, basin return flow, and interbasin transfers of wastewater. Frequently, interbasin transfers of freshwater and wastewater are not included in basin water budgets because they occur within public water-delivery and wastewater-collection systems. A new 10-step method was developed to improve estimates of inflow and infiltration and interbasin transfers using readily available statewide data. The accuracy and precision of water-use estimates determined by this method are improved through careful application of coefficients for small users and the use of metered values for large users. The method was developed and tested with data for the Ten Mile River Basin in southeastern Massachusetts. This report uses examples from the basin to illustrate each step of the method.

Uranium analysis of single drops of natural waters using the fission-track technique

The fission-track technique has been applied to uranium analysis of natural waters using a single drop of water. Samples may be collected in the field by evaporating a drop of water on a detector, and samples may then be analyzed by returning the detector to the laboratory. A sample collecting kit has been assembled, which facilitates the designed sampling method. Some unique advantages of this technique are picogram sensitivity (10 -12 g) for uranium on single drops of water, maintenance of sample integrity during transport and storage, and the ability to discern whether the uranium is in solution or in the suspended material. Counting the tracks is the most time-consuming part of the analysis, but it can be reduced by using automatic counting systems. The analytical error is generally ± 10 percent over the entire range of concentrations.

Diamond drilling at the Ma'milah Mine, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

The Ma'millah gold mine is about 90 km southeast of At Ta'if at lat 21°03'N., long 41°18'E., in southwestern Saudi Arabia. The deposit, which was worked extensively by ancient miners, consists of several veins and massive lenses of quartz along a regional fault. The extensive ancient mine workings, large size of some quartz outcrops, and significant gold content of several samples indicated that subsurface exploration was warranted. Accordingly, two holes were drilled into the deposit during the interval December 1972 to February 1973. The drill findings were disappointing; the grade of vein material was found to be too low to be of economic interest and the quartz bodies were found to pinch out both along strike and downdip. The drilling program therefore was terminated. The deposit is not worth further exploration

Ma'milah Mine

Summary of results from electromagnetic and galvanic soundings on Kilauea Iki lava lake, Hawaii

The purpose of this report is to summarize various electrical sounding studies made on the Kilauea Iki lava lake and to present some of the preliminary interpretations that resulted from the measurements. The following discussion is not intended as a complete interpretation, but is intended to summarize the major points made in an invited oral presentation at the American Geophysical Union fall meeting held in San Francisco, Calif. on December 6, 1976. This paper was part of a group of papers dealing with various geophysical studies recently made on the Kilauea Iki lava lake. A general plan map of Kilauea Iki lava lake is shown in figure 1. Electromagnetic (EM) loop-loop soundings, D.C. resistivity soundings, and VLF apparent resistivity measurements were made on the lave lake surface. All of these surveys were made to determine the geoelectric structure of the lava lake and to determine parameters of the molten basaltic lens that exist in the partially solidified lava lake.

Hawaii

A crosswalk of the 2015 World Terrestrial Ecosystems to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature Global Ecosystem Typology Framework

To support ecosystem mapping and accounting applications, we aligned the 2015 U.S. Geological Survey/Esri/The Nature Conservancy-World Terrestrial Ecosystems (WTEs) with the International Union for Conservation of Nature Global Ecosystem Typology (GET) framework. This process, known as “crosswalking,” enabled the development of a global map of GET level 3 Ecosystem Functional Groups (EFGs) at a 250-meter spatial resolution. Crosswalking involved manually assigning 1,781 biogeographically stratified WTEs to their most probable EFG based on similarities in climate, terrain, vegetation, and geographic distribution. We compared attributes of the WTE dataset with summary characteristics of the EFGs. The resulting crosswalked global map of International Union for Conservation of Nature GET ecosystems is intended to be useful for standardizing ecosystem classification and reporting under frameworks such as the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the United Nations System of Environmental-Economic Accounting. We discuss key challenges in reconciling non-identical classifications, such as many-to-one relationships and variation in data quality.

Analysis of the potential effects of Uzbekistan’s mineral endowment on the critical mineral supply of tungsten

Tungsten appears on the 2018 and 2022 U.S. Geological Survey critical mineral lists in part because of a very high global production concentration in China, which produces almost 83 percent of the world’s mined tungsten. Using known parameters and values from other tungsten mining operations, we created hypothetical scenarios in which three tungsten deposits in Uzbekistan are considered for development. Our results show that all three deposits are likely to be economically viable to develop under 2024 market conditions. If the three studied tungsten deposits were put into production, Uzbekistan could become the third-leading tungsten-producing country in the world and increase world output of tungsten by 2.7 percent. Putting these tungsten deposits in Uzbekistan into production could slightly reduce the tungsten global market concentration, therefore reducing the supply disruption potential for tungsten.

The mineral economy of Brazil--Economia mineral do Brasil

This study depicts the Brazilian government structure, mineral legislation and investment policy, taxation, foreign investment policies, environmental laws and regulations, and conditions in which the mineral industry operates. The report underlines Brazil's large and diversified mineral endowment. A total of 37 mineral commodities, or groups of closely related commodities, is discussed. An overview of the geologic setting of the major mineral deposits is presented. This report is presented in English and Portuguese in pdf format.

Neutron activation analysis in hydrology

Neutron activation analysis in hydrogeochemical and related investigations is increasingly practical because of developments in radiation detectors and computerized data processing. While neutron activation is the most widely used kind of activation analysis other kinds (for example, charged particle activation) are available for special applications. Neutron activation analysis is promising because approximately 70 percent of the elements in the periodic table are detected with satisfactory sensitivity, contamination from reagents is eliminated, simultaneous determination of more than 20 elements is often possible, technique is versatile, is applicable to small samples and is non-destructive in the instrumental form. Developments in theU.S. Geological Survey include a special sampling technique for water; a comprehensive technique using carriers precipitated with sulfide to concentrate desired trace elements; a determination of mercury, silver, and gold; determination of aluminum, vanadium and nine other elements; determinations of two groups of rare earth elements; and adaptations of the analytical methods to sediment and biota.

The water quality of Livingston Reservoir on the Trinity River, Southeastern Texas

The concentrations of dissolved solids, chloride, and sulfate in Livingstone Reservoir on the Trinity River in southeastern Texas usually average less than 250 mg/1 (milligrams per litre), 40 mg/1, and 50 mg/1, respectively. The water is usually hard or moderately hard (61 to 180 mg/1 as calcium carbonate). The concentrations of principal dissolved constituents in the reservoir are usually maximum during summer and fall when evaporation is high and inflow is low. Thermal stratification of the reservoir usually begins in March and persists until September or October. Neither the seasonal variation of dissolved constituents in inflow to the reservoir nor thermal stratification has resulted in significant stratification of the principal dissolved constituents. However, thermal stratification has resulted in significant seasonal and areal variations of dissolved oxygen, which results in higher concentration of dissolved iron, dissolved manganese, total phosphorus, and total inorganic nitrogen.
