Petrography and mineralogy of selected pre-Middle Jurassic basement rocks beneath the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plains in Florida

Florida is covered by flat-lying sedimentary strata of the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plains. These strata have accumulated since Middle Jurassic time. The pre-Middle Jurassic, or basement, rocks that underlie the Coastal Plain in Florida are known only from drill cores and cuttings recovered from a relatively small number of boreholes. This data report presents petrographic observations and the results of X-ray diffraction analyses of basement rocks from 18 boreholes across Florida in support of the identification, discrimination, and correlation of units for a subcrop geologic map of pre-Middle Jurassic rocks composing Florida’s sub-Coastal Plain geology.

Floods of February 1989 in Tennessee

Rainfall amounts of over 5 inches the night of February 13 and the morning of February 14, 1989, caused flooding in areas of Middle and West Tennessee. The towns of Lebanon in Middle Tennessee and Obion in West Tennessee were most severely affected. Most of the business district in Lebanon and many residential areas in Obion were flooded. Recurrence intervals for 24-hour rainfall totals were as high as 25 years at some sites but most peak discharges had recurrence intervals of less than 10 years. Rainfall amounts for the period February 13-20, 1989, peak stages and discharges for this flood, the peak of record, and a list of discharge measurements made during the flood are documented in this report.

On the provenance of field reports of the 1886 Charleston, South Carolina, earthquake: A seismo-historical whodunnit

Much of what is known about the effects of the 1886 Charleston, South Carolina, earthquake throughout the epicentral region can be attributed to meticulous field investigations by an individual with training in geology and engineering, Earle Sloan ( Clendenin, 1926 ). In a recent study, Bilham and Hough (2024) undertook a detailed analysis of the effects of the earthquake on railroads in the Charleston region, drawing heavily from Sloan’s reports. This exercise identified several inconsistencies in Sloan’s field reports, including understandable measurement imprecision, inferred data entry mistakes, and transcription errors. The study also begged the question, where was Sloan at the time of the mainshock and over the following week? And to what extent did he draw from secondhand information in compiling his reports? On this question Sloan’s reports were sometimes enigmatic, lending themselves to misinterpretation in contemporaneous as well as modern interpretations. Beyond the details that were germane for, and briefly summarized by, the studies of Bilham and Hough (2023 , 2024) , in this report we don our historical seismologist caps to chronicle Sloan’s activities following the earthquake. We summarize our inferences here for the benefit of future scholars who might attempt to retrace either Sloan’s footsteps or our own. This study also serves to highlight Sloan’s singular contributions to earthquake science, which were never published separately.

An inventory of three-dimensional geologic models—U.S. Geological Survey, 2004–22

A database of spatial footprints and characteristics of three-dimensional geological models that were constructed by the U.S. Geological Survey between 2004 and 2022 was compiled as part of ongoing development of subsurface geologic information by the USGS National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program. This initial inventory resulted in the compilation of 38 three-dimensional geological models that vary widely in their spatial extent, the type and purpose of the model, the number of subsurface units characterized by the model, and the software platforms used to create the model. This Data Report provides the scientific rationale and explanation of the contents of a companion USGS digital data release of spatial data and attributes associated with each three-dimensional model.

Bathymetric and acoustic-backscatter mapping of Lake Sammamish, Washington, during USGS field activity 2021-656-FA

In 2021, scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) acquired bathymetric and acoustic-backscatter data within Lake Sammamish, Washington. Mapping was completed to find evidence of past earthquakes such as underwater landslides and is part of a larger USGS project to understand the overall geologic hazards history of the Cascadia Margin region. The survey was conducted using the USGS research vessel Parke Snavely outfitted with an interferometric sidescan-sonar system for swath mapping. Three estimates of bathymetric uncertainty were calculated from the post-processed bathymetric data. This report provides a summary of the mapping mission.

2023 Earthquake Ground-Motion Workshop for the Central and Eastern United States, with a focus on the Gulf and Atlantic Coastal Plains—Agenda and abstracts

The U.S. Geological Survey held a virtual workshop December 7–8, 2023, to share research and ideas about earthquake ground motions in the Central and Eastern United States, with a focus on the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plains. The workshop was organized to learn about potential regionalization of ground-motion characteristics (source, path, and site), consider new explanatory variables for site response, and hear and discuss updates on ground-motion research on the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plains. The workshop was organized into a series of contributed presentations and three panel discussions held during 2 days. This report documents the agenda, contributed abstracts, and panel summaries.

2024 Crustal Deformation Modeling Workshop report

The 2024 Crustal Deformation Modeling Workshop was held June 10–14 at the Colorado School of Mines. The workshop included two days of tutorials on using PyLith for crustal deformation modeling, followed by three days of science talks and discussions. The workshop focused on four primary themes: ● Constraining long-term fault slip rates and their uncertainties using geodetic and geologic data; ● Earthquake cycle modeling with a focus on constraining models using seismic and geodetic data; ● Interaction of fluids and faulting; and ● Separating contributions of surface loading and tectonic loading in crustal deformation. Preliminary geology of the North Meadow Creek Area, Tobacco Root Mountains, southwest Montana: The North Meadow Creek Fault

This report documents a previously unmapped fault, informally referred to herein as the North Meadow Creek fault, on the east flank of the Tobacco Mountains of southwestern Montana. This fault has an apparently long and complex history, including Quaternary offset of an older alluvial terrace, offset of a debris flow of presumed Pleistocene age, offset of rhyolite lava flows of presumed Tertiary age from their presumed source several kilometers east, on the opposite side of the fault, and offset and possible rotation of blocks of Archean gneiss on northeast side of the fault. The western part of the fault is covered by glacial moraines of two apparent ages, both Pleistocene.

Water, ice, meteorological, and speed measurements at South Cascade Glacier, Washington, 1999 balance year

Winter snow accumulation and summer snow, firn, and ice melt were measured at South Cascade Glacier, Washington, to determine the winter and net balances for the 1999 balance year. The 1999 winter snow balance, averaged over the glacier, was 3.59 meters, and the net balance was 1.02 meters. Since the winter balance record began in 1959, only three winters have had a higher winter balance. Since the net balance record began in 1953, only 2 years have had a greater positive net balance than 1999. Runoff was measured from the glacier and an adjacent non-glacierized basin. Air temperature, precipitation, and humidity were measured nearby, and ice speed was measured. This report makes these data available to the glaciological and climatological community.

Technique for estimating magnitude and frequency of floods in Kentucky

This report presents flood magnitude and frequency relations applicable to unregulated streams in Kentucky. The relations are based on flood data at 117 gaging stations in Kentucky and 14 in adjacent states having 10 or more years of record not significantly affected by man-made changes. Equations that relate flood magnitude and frequency to contributing drainage area in 16 geographic areas may be used to estimate magnitude of future floods with recurrence intervals of as much as 100 years on gaged and ungaged streams having drainage areas of 10 to 4,300 square miles (25 .9 to 11,100 square kilometers) . Estimating equations are also presented in graphical form for the convenience of the user. Additional graphs are presented to estimate flood magnitude for selected recurrence intervals along the Cumberland, Kentucky, and Ohio Rivers.

Technique for estimating depth of floods in Tennessee

Estimates of flood depths are needed for design of roadways across flood plains and for other types of construction along streams. Equations for estimating flood depths in Tennessee were derived using data for 150 gaging stations. The equations are based on drainage basin size and can be used to estimate depths of the 10-year and 100-year floods for four hydrologic areas. A method also was developed for estimating depth of floods having recurrence intervals between 10 and 100 years. Standard errors range from 22 to 30 percent for the 10-year depth equations and from 23 to 30 percent for the 100-year depth equations.

Cruise summary—Samoa Basin abyssal mapping—Box coring leg, Pago Pago, Territory of American Samoa to Pago Pago, American Samoa, April 11– May 1, 2026

Expedition Summary U.S. Geological Survey scientists led a box coring effort to the Samoa Basin to characterize minerals and the surrounding abyssal sediments and fauna. Thirty-eight box cores were deployed between April 13, 2026, and April 28, 2026. Thirty-six box cores recovered sufficient material to determine nodule density, and 35 recovered sufficient material for subcores to be collected. The purpose of this Data Report is to provide a summary of samples collected, initial results that were obtained shipboard, and briefly mention planned future analyses from this expedition.

Creation of aerial camera system boresight installations in Bangor, Maine; Monroe, Louisiana; and Bassville Park, Florida

Aerial camera systems rely on boresights for defining internal and external metrics. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Migratory Bird Surveys Branch required boresights to calibrate their camera systems for creating georeferenced imagery that can then be used in geographic information systems. The U.S. Geological Survey created high-accuracy boresight installations in Bangor, Maine, in July 2024; Monroe, Louisiana, in September 2024; and Bassville Park, Florida, in January 2025 to provide this metric-defining capacity to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This U.S. Geological Survey Data Report details the methods and results of the boresight installation process and provides camera operators with the data needed to use each of the installations.

Heat-flow data from southeastern Oregon

With the exception of values from two holes drilled within 2 km of Mickey Hot Springs, 17 new heat-flow values in southeastern Oregon are within or somewhat below the range one would normally expect in non-anomalous parts of the North American Cordillera. This is not surprising for a region in which most igneous rocks on the surface are 5 m.y. old or more. There is a suggestion of a thermal anomaly associated with the very young (late Pleistocene or Holocene) Diamond Craters lava field, and the thermal regime on both sides of Steens Mountain seems to be controlled, to some degree, by lateral and vertical movement of water.

Preconditioned Conjugate-Gradient 2 (PCG2), a computer program for solving ground-water flow equations

This report documents PCG2: a numerical code to be used with the U.S. Geological Survey modular three-dimensional, finite-difference, ground-water flow model. PCG2 uses the preconditioned conjugate-gradient method to solve the equations produced by the model for hydraulic head. Linear or nonlinear flow conditions may be simulated. PCG2 includes two reconditioning options: modified incomplete Cholesky preconditioning, which is efficient on scalar computers; and polynomial preconditioning, which requires less computer storage and, with modifications that depend on the computer used, is most efficient on vector computers. Convergence of the solver is determined using both head-change and residual criteria. Nonlinear problems are solved using Picard iterations. This documentation provides a description of the preconditioned conjugate gradient method and the two preconditioners, detailed instructions for linking PCG2 to the modular model, sample data inputs, a brief description of PCG2, and a FORTRAN listing.

Ungulate migrations of the Western United States, volume 5

Many ungulates migrate between distinct summer and winter ranges to take advantage of spatially and temporally variable food sources and avoid threats such as predators and deep snow. In 2018, the U.S. Department of the Interior established Secretarial Order 3362, which provided Federal support to expand existing research efforts to study ungulate populations and conserve their migrations by enhancing habitat quality for ungulates across the Western United States. In response to the order, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) created the Corridor Mapping Team, which is a collaboration among 11 State agencies, regional and Federal partners, and an expanding number of Tribal wildlife agencies. Together, the Corridor Mapping Team maps ungulate migrations throughout the Western United States and publishes them in the USGS “Ungulate Migrations of the Western United States” report series. This report details migrations and seasonal ranges from 36 additional herds and includes 2 herd updates detailed in previous reports. The Corridor Mapping Team has mapped the migrations and seasonal ranges of 218 unique herds for the report series, including this report. The report series serves as a map-based inventory of the ungulate migrations across the Western United States for biologists, managers, policymakers, and conservation practitioners. Building on the previous report volumes in the series, volume 5 additionally describes some of the local and national initiatives that are incorporating the products, tools, and information from this growing USGS report series.

Detailed investigation of a coastal plain-Piedmont fault contact in northeastern Virginia

A trench across the Dumfries fault of the Stafford fault zone near Stafford, Virginia (see Mixon and Newell, 1976) exposed a high-angle reverse fault juxtaposing Paleozoic Quantico Slate and Cretaceous Potomac Group rocks. A system of subsidiary reverse faults and small scale normal faults disrupt the Coastal Plain strata adjacent to the main fault. Cross-cutting relations and stratigraphic details indicate that the subsidiary faults in the Cretaceous rocks document a history of episodic deformation, in part active during accumulation of the Coastal Plain strata. Slickensides and stereo net analysis of theorientation of subsidiary reverse faults, normal faults, and bedding indicate that, through time, faulting consistently included right lateral separation.
