Abstract

This chapter provides an introduction to crater-size frequency distribution (CSFD) measurements and presents a review of the work performed on dating lunar geological units using CSFDs since the last New Views of the Moon volume (2006), including various volcanic and tectonic features, as well as individual impact craters. At the end of the chapter, implications for the new CSFD age determinations for the geologic history and evolution of the Moon are discussed.

The early Earth as an analogue for exoplanetary biogeochemistry

Planet Earth has evolved over the past 4.5 billion years from an entirely anoxic planet with possibly a different tectonic regime to the oxygenated world with horizontal plate tectonics that we know today. For most of this time, Earth has been inhabited by a purely microbial biosphere albeit with seemingly increasing complexity over time. A rich record of this geobiological evolution over most of Earth’s history thus provides insights into the remote detectability of microbial life under a variety of planetary conditions. Here we leverage Earth’s geobiological record with the aim of (a) illustrating the current state of knowledge and key knowledge gaps about the early Earth as a reference point in exoplanet science research; (b) compiling biotic and abiotic mechanisms that controlled the evolution of the atmosphere over time; and (c) reviewing current constraints on the detectability of Earth’s early biosphere with state-of-the-art telescope technology. We highlight that life may have originated on a planet with a different (stagnant lid) tectonic regime and strong hydrothermal activity, and under these conditions, biogenic CH 4 gas was perhaps the most detectable atmospheric biosignature. Oxygenic photosynthesis, which is responsible for essentially all O 2 gas in the modern atmosphere, appears to have emerged concurrently with the establishment of modern plate tectonics and the emergence of continental crust, but O 2 accumulation to modern levels only occurred late in Earth’s history, perhaps tied to the rise of land plants. Nutrient limitation in anoxic oceans, promoted by hydrothermal Fe fluxes, may have limited biological productivity and O 2 production. N 2 O is an alternative biosignature that was perhaps significant on the redox-stratified Proterozoic Earth. We conclude that the detectability of atmospheric biosignatures on Earth was not only dependent on biological evolution but also strongly controlled by the evolving tectonic context.

Lunar mare basaltic volcanism: Volcanic features and emplacement processes

Volcanism is a fundamental process in the geological evolution of the Moon, providing clues to the composition and structure of the mantle, the location and duration of interior melting, the nature of convection and lunar thermal evolution. Progress in understanding volcanism has been remarkable in the short 60-year span of the Space Age. Before Sputnik 1 in 1957, the lunar farside was unknown, the origin of the dark lunar maria was debated (sedimentary or volcanic), and significant controversy surrounded the question of how the multitude of craters on the surface formed. Was the Moon formed hot or cold, was the lunar surface young or old, were the craters of impact or volcanic origin? A lunar farside deficient in the darker maria was revealed by Luna 3 in 1959 ( Lipsky 1965a , b ). The Ranger, Lunar Orbiter, Surveyor, Luna and Zond missions significantly augmented pre-Sputnik telescopic observations and began to reveal the diversity of lunar geologic landforms. Return of lunar soil and rock samples from the lunar surface by Apollo (11–12, 14–17) ( Compton 1989 ) and Luna (16, 20, 24) missions ( Harvey 2007a , b ; Huntress and Marov 2011 ) changed the debates overnight ( Hinners 1971 ; Taylor 1975 ). The lunar rocks were igneous and extremely ancient, all from the first half of Solar System history; the oldest, highland anorthosites, were overlain by relatively younger, but still extremely old, extrusive basalts forming the maria.

The environmental geochemistry of Arsenic – An overview

Arsenic is one of the most prevalent toxic elements in the environment. The toxicity, mobility, and fate of arsenic in the environment are determined by a complex series of controls dependent on mineralogy, chemical speciation, and biological processes. The element was first described by Theophrastus in 300 B.C. and named arsenikon (also arrhenicon; Caley and Richards 1956 ) referring to its “potent” nature, although it was originally considered an alternative form of sulfur ( Boyle and Jonasson 1973 ). Arsenikon is believed to be derived from the earlier Persian, zarnik (online etymology dictionary, http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=arsenic ). It was not until the thirteenth century that an alchemist, Albertus Magnus, was able to isolate the element from orpiment, an arsenic sulfide (As 2 S 3 ). The complex chemistry required to do this led to arsenic being considered a “bastard metal” or what we now call a “metalloid,” having properties of both metals and non-metals. As a chemical element, arsenic is widely distributed in nature and can be concentrated in many different ways. In the Earth’s crust, arsenic is concentrated by magmatic and hydrothermal processes and has been used as a “pathfinder” for metallic ore deposits, particularly gold, tin, copper, and tungsten ( Boyle and Jonasson 1973 ; Cohen and Bowell 2014 ). It has for centuries been considered a potent toxin, is a common poison in actual and fictional crimes, and has led to significant impacts on human health in many areas of the world ( Cullen 2008 ; Wharton 2010 ).
