Book review: The future of Antarctica

Abstract

A conference on Antarctica: an Exploitable Resource too Valuable to Develop? took place at the Sir Robert Menzies Centre for Australian studies at the University of London in either late 1989 or early 1990. The papers were compiled into this small book (only 104 pages of text exclusive of useful appendices containing maps, texts of the Antarctic treaty and the Convention on the regulation of Antarctic Mineral Resource Activity [CRAMRA]) which addresses the hottest issues confronting the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Parties in the early 1990’s. Some of the discussion is being overtaken by events, but fortunately, the general quality and broadness of the coverage will make the book useful to diplomats, historians, international lawyers, scientists and other environmentalists for some time to come.

Importance of fish in the diet of Adélie penguins across multiple life stages

Over recent decades, the Adélie penguin ( Pygoscelis adeliae ) population has grown across most of its range, the exception being the northern coast of the western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP). In the Ross Sea, the very large Cape Crozier colony grew to reach ~9% of the global population. Demographic factors driving the Cape Crozier trend have yet to be identified. However, low chick fledging mass - a negative influence in the northern WAP where the diet is mostly less-energy-dense krill - is not showing an effect in the Cape Crozier colony. Previously, we hypothesized that Cape Crozier fledglings, and post-breeding adults, must be finding sufficient higher-quality prey once free of the prey-depleted colony foraging area, with subsequent higher survival. Here we explore penguin diet within and outside the colony foraging area using stable isotope analysis (SIA) of feathers: those grown by post-breeding adults outside the foraging area, prior to moult, compared to those of near-fledged chicks raised on meals obtained within the foraging area. Second, we explore whether a major difference occurs between breeding and post-breeding diet of adults from a small, nearby colony (Cape Royds) that exploits a smaller, little-depleted preyscape. Finally, we compare the results to SIA analyses published by others to explore whether the pre-moult diet of Ross Island adults, mostly foraging within the north-eastern Ross Sea, compares with that of adults nesting in the southern WAP (Bellingshausen Sea coast). At the latter, populations are not decreasing, with diet containing an appreciable contribution of fish. The results confirmed that fish contributed greatly to chick diets at both Ross Island colonies (δ 15 N 10.6–11.4). Once adults were released from central-place foraging, SIA levels (δ 15 N 9.7–12.9) were similar to those of the southern WAP. Foraging on energy-dense fish in coastal Antarctic waters could be one reason Adélie penguins are among the most abundant and therefore most ecologically successful penguin species.

First vertebrate assemblage from the middle member of the Fremouw Formation (Lower Triassic) of Antarctica

The Fremouw Formation of the Central Transantarctic Mountains preserves the southernmost record of Early to Middle Triassic terrestrial ecosystems that developed in the aftermath of the end-Permian mass extinction. Although the well-studied vertebrate fossil assemblage in the lower member of the Fremouw Formation provides a detailed snapshot of subpolar ecosystems immediately following the end-Permian mass extinction, the nature of how long these earliest Triassic communities persisted at the southern extremes of Pangaea is virtually unknown. Importantly, the timing and extent of the major faunal turnover between the lower and upper members of the Fremouw Formation have been obscured by the paucity of fossil specimens historically recovered from the middle member. Here, we describe the first vertebrate assemblage from the middle member of the Fremouw Formation, including occurrences of procolophonids (including Procolophon trigoniceps ) and archosauromorphs (including Prolacerta broomi ), as well as infilled vertebrate burrow casts referrable to the ichnogenus Reniformichnus . We also summarize and expand on lithostratigraphic shifts between the lower, middle and upper members of the Fremouw Formation. Although the sample size of vertebrate body fossils is small compared to the lower and upper members of the Fremouw Formation, we discuss the evidence for a taphonomic shift between the lower and middle members of the Fremouw Formation that favours preservation of smaller-bodied taxa and individuals in the latter. Together, these preliminary data add crucial context to the persistence of subpolar vertebrate communities in the earliest Mesozoic.

Summer snow determines the depth to ice-cemented ground under dry permafrost in Antarctica

Dry permafrost underlain by ice-cemented permafrost has been reported in several locations in Antarctica. Initially thought to be relic ice, it is now understood that this subsurface ice is in equilibrium with the surface conditions, although it is not in equilibrium with the atmosphere. We use year-round data from University Valley in the Dry Valleys and Elephant Head in the Ellsworth Mountains to investigate the seasonal variations in water vapour flux that control the depth to the ice table under dry permafrost. Our analysis shows that the mean annual water vapour density of the soil surface exceeds the atmospheric value by a factor of up to ~2 due to summer snow. The attenuation and phase shift of the annual temperature cycle with depth result in colder temperatures at the ice table than at the surface of the soil in summer. We conclude that this temperature gradient, combined with the summer snow, provides the flux of water to the ice table necessary to maintain the ice. In University Valley, reducing the snow days by 40% moves the stability depth of the ice table from 42 to 66 cm. Increasing the snow days by 60% shifts the ice table to 17 cm. These variations can explain the observed gradient in the depth to the ice table in University Valley.
