Abstract

Erratum to: Mar Biol (2014) 161:2659–2668 DOI 10.1007/s00227-014-2537-0 The Open Robust Model methods used for analysis in this study were developed by Kendall and Bjorkland ( 2001 ) and Kendall ( 2010 ). The language used in this manuscript to describe formatting and implementation of data for these analyses was derived heavily from Phillips et al. ( 2014 ). Therefore, the wording in the last paragraph of the ‘Materials and methods’ (p. 2662) and in the last paragraph of the ‘Results’ (p. 2663) of our publication is largely identical to the corresponding sections on pp. 865–866 in Phillips et al. ( 2014 ). Unfortunately, we did not indicate this adequately, thus proper credit was not given to the contribution of Phillips et al. ( 2014 ) in our publication.

Accounting for emigration reveals high survival and bimodal size at departure from a loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) foraging area

The life history of hard-shelled sea turtles includes several ontogenetic shifts in habitat use and these complex permanent emigration patterns can impact estimates of stage-specific population rates, including survival. We developed several multistate mark recapture models to estimate survival of adult and juvenile loggerhead turtles from a coastal bay in the northern Gulf of America (also commonly referred to as the Gulf of Mexico) while, in some cases, accounting for permanent emigration and transient individuals. Our mark-recapture dataset consisted of 228 individual turtles with 37 total recaptures from 2011 to 2024. Of the models we fit, those that incorporated emigration produced higher estimates for annual survival than models that did not, and higher estimates than what is commonly seen in the literature for loggerheads. All models suggested a major permanent emigration pulse at the typical size of sexual maturity (70 cm straight carapace length) and another major pulse at > 90 cm. This bimodal pattern of departure may reflect differences in size at sexual maturity among loggerheads, possible genetic variability within the assemblage, or both. To assess the models’ ability to effectively recover true parameter values, we developed a simulation study of 50 randomly generated independent data sets under our specified models of similar sample size to our study dataset. Simulation results suggested that models that accounted for permanent emigration and transient individuals produced relatively unbiased estimates of survival, while models that did not often underestimated survival rates. Mark-recapture studies that may exhibit emigration and suffer from low recapture rates would benefit from auxiliary data collection such as acoustic telemetry detections to better estimate true rates of emigration and survival. Obtaining unbiased estimates of true survival by accounting for processes like emigration can support effective conservation of endangered long-lived species like loggerheads.

Variable pH habitats could help prepare stone crabs for coastal acidification

Coastal acidification is being exacerbated by terrestrial organic inputs, especially after high precipitation events. Florida’s rainy season coincides with stone crab ( Menippe mercenaria) reproduction, and pH extremes could limit future harvests by reducing reproductive output. Populations that experience pH variability can serve as “natural laboratories” for estimating the tolerance of a species to coastal acidification. Here, we conducted a series of experiments to determine if ovigerous stone crabs conditioned in more variable pH habitats (seagrass) would result in faster embryonic development, greater hatching success, and higher larval survival relative to crabs conditioned in habitats with lower pH variability (sandy habitats). After field conditioning, crabs were transported to the laboratory and randomly acclimated to either a control pH (pH = ~ 7.90) or a reduced pH condition (pH = ~ 7.60) until larval release. The rate of embryo development was slower in the laboratory reduced pH treatment, however, there were no observable field condition effects on embryo development rate. Crabs conditioned in the more pH variable seagrass habitat did have greater hatching success and higher larval survival than crabs in less pH variable sandy habitats; however, larval survival was low across all treatments. These results suggest that the pH variability experienced in seagrass habitats during brooding may serve as a mechanism for stone crabs to acclimatize to extremes in seawater pH.

Energetic value of Arctic forage-sized fish with implications for a nearshore seabird predator

Arctic cod ( Boreogadus saida , also called polar cod) are considered the single most important Arctic forage fish due to their high abundance and nutritional quality. Because Arctic cod are strongly ice associated and prefer colder waters, their frequency in coastal waters has declined with warming, decreasing availability to nearshore predators. To consider the nutritional quality of alternative prey, we measured energy density and estimated whole-body energy of forage-size (39–200 mm) fishes collected during summers 2021–2023 ( n = 274). The fishes sampled included 16 potential prey species from Foggy Island Bay (70.3°N, 147.5°W, near Prudhoe Bay) and Lion Bay (70.2°N, 146.4°W, near Flaxman Island), northern Alaska. Dry weight energy densities ranged from 16.2 to 27.5 kJ g -1 (mean ± SD = 22.0 ± 1.73 kJ g -1 , n = 274) across individuals. Of common species, Arctic cod had the highest mean energy density (24.3 ± 1.1 kJ g -1 , n = 25) and fourhorn sculpin ( Myoxocephalus quadricornis ) had the lowest (19.7 ± 0.8 kJ g -1 , n = 20). To account for size differences among prey species, whole-body energy of typical fish sizes available to predators were modeled using whole-body energy to length relationships and length distributions. Juvenile salmonids (e.g., ciscoes and whitefishes) provided the most energy per individual and were four-fold greater than smaller-bodied Arctic cod. Predators that consume juvenile ciscoes and whitefishes may be more resilient to declines in Arctic cod availability than predators with smaller gapes.
