Preliminary investigation of some large landslides triggered by the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, Sichuan Province, China

Abstract

The M s 8.0 Wenchuan earthquake or "Great Sichuan Earthquake" occurred at 14:28 p.m. local time on 12 May 2008 in Sichuan Province, China. Damage by earthquake-induced landslides was an important part of the total earthquake damage. This report presents preliminary observations on the Hongyan Resort slide located southwest of the main epicenter, shallow mountain surface failures in Xuankou village of Yingxiu Town, the Jiufengchun slide near Longmenshan Town, the Hongsong Hydro-power Station slide near Hongbai Town, the Xiaojiaqiao slide in Chaping Town, two landslides in Beichuan County-town which destroyed a large part of the town, and the Donghekou and Shibangou slides in Qingchuan County which formed the second biggest landslide lake formed in this earthquake. The influences of seismic, topographic, geologic, and hydro-geologic conditions are discussed. ?? 2009 Springer-Verlag.

Assessment of extreme subsurface hydrologic conditions captured during atmospheric river storms in the San Francisco Bay area (California, USA) with applications to shallow landslide early warning

An increase in soil pore water pressure is the typical trigger for the majority of landslides caused by rainfall. Atmospheric river storms, common to the west coast of North America during the winter season, can deliver landslide triggering rainfall resulting in severe impacts to coastal communities. Using a network of hydrologic monitoring stations situated within landslide-prone terrain in the San Francisco Bay area of California (USA), we assess the meteorologic conditions and resulting hydrologic and landslide response resulting from eight consecutive storm events that caused thousands of shallow landslides during the winter of 2022–2023. We find disparate hydrological responses and resultant degrees of observed landsliding ranging from < 1 landslide/km2 to 18 landslides/km2 at the monitoring sites that reflect the interplay and differences between rainfall delivery, subsurface hydrological characteristics, and geotechnical properties at each site. Antecedent soil moisture from both early season rainfall and the first storm in the sequence played a critical role in setting up some hillslopes for failure. Subsequent storms then generated elevated pore water pressures for several hours with associated landsliding. However, we find that the occurrence of widespread landsliding required not only sufficient pore water pressure magnitude in susceptible hillslopes, but also full and prolonged effective soil saturation throughout hillslope profiles. Landslides may still occur at lower values and durations of effective saturation but are likely to be less extensive regionally. We present these findings within the context of research directions and improvements to landslide early warning systems first suggested by researchers 40 years ago.

From start to stop: Simple methods for mapping susceptibility to landslide runout and debris-flow inundation

Landslide runout and debris-flow inundation can disrupt areas well beyond their initial sources, causing widespread damage and extensive fatalities. Understanding where they start and how far they might travel is essential in many locations worldwide. However, most landslide susceptibility maps focus on initiation areas and fail to incorporate runout areas. Furthermore, hazards vary greatly with the degree of landslide mobility, and debris flows can grow as they travel beyond their initial source. Here, we use the USGS Grfin Tools software suite to map susceptible areas from start to stop in the Federated States of Micronesia where landslide and debris-flows runout onto gentle ground is a deadly threat. The DEM-based models in Grfin Tools use simple, empirical, and well-documented approaches that require minimal parameters and, thus, can be used in areas that lack detailed physical properties. We illustrate methods to estimate the required parameters using direct landslide observations, and we suggest alternate methods if direct observations are absent. Our simple parameter estimations in the Federated States of Micronesia successfully predict areas that match past landslide runout and debris-flow inundation, as well as zones with no inundation. In addition to creating preliminary regional assessments, Grfin Tools can be used for comparing multiple scenarios and/or identifying areas for further investigations.

The influence of postfire root strength decay on shallow landslide susceptibility in western Oregon

Severe wildfires can increase the potential for postfire landslides, partly due to the loss of vegetation and root reinforcement. This study investigates the multi-year dynamics of root strength following wildfire in coniferous forests of western Oregon and evaluates implications for postfire slope stability. Root tensile strength was measured through laboratory testing of 969 roots collected from 26 test pits over four postfire timeframes: unburned conditions, 4–12 months postfire (Cedar Creek, 2022), 24–35 months postfire (Holiday Farm, 2020), and 59–67 months postfire (Eagle Creek, 2017). Variables analyzed include root diameter, tensile thread strength, stiffness, progressive tensile strength with displacement, time-dependent strength and ductility, root area ratio, and cohesion. Results indicate a 50% reduction in root strength after wildfire, with the lowest values occurring around 4 years postfire. Projections indicate it could take 10–22 years following fire for root strength to recover to 70% and 90% of the prefire original root strength, respectively. This timeline indicates a multi-year window of vulnerability for shallow landslides that reaches a maximum approximately 4 years following fire. Brittle failure behavior was observed in burned root systems compared to unburned root systems, signaling a more abrupt loss of strength at yield. Simple slope stability analyses show that reduced root strength can lead to instability on more gentle slopes and under less saturation in comparison to unburned conditions. These findings highlight the critical role of root reinforcement in postfire slope stability and the long-term implications of wildfire disturbance on landslide susceptibility.
