Abstract

The application of molecular techniques to conservation genetics issues can provide important guidance criteria for management of endangered species. The results from this study establish that PCR-based approaches for sex determination developed in other bird species (Griffiths and Tiwari 1995; Griffiths et al. 1996, 1998; Ellegren 1996) can be applied with a high degree of confidence to at least four species of Hawaiian honeycreepers. This provides a rapid, reliable method with which population managers can optimize sex ratios within populations of endangered species that are subject to artificial manipulation through captive breeding programmes or geographic translocation.

Automated methods for processing camera trap video data for distance sampling

Context Population monitoring is an essential need for tracking biodiversity and judging efficacy of conservation management actions, both globally and in the Pacific. However, population monitoring efforts are often temporally inconsistent and limited to small scales. Motion-activated cameras (‘camera traps’) offer a way to cost-effectively monitor populations, but they also generate large amounts of data that are time intensive to process. Aims To develop an automated pipeline for processing videos of ungulates (Philippine deer, Rusa marianna ; and pigs, Sus scrofa ) on Andersen Air Force Base in Guam. Methods We processed camera videos with a machine learning model for object detection and classification. To estimate density using distance sampling methods, we used a separate machine learning model to estimate the distance of target animals from the camera. We compared density estimates generated using manual versus automated methods and assessed accuracy and processing time saved. Key results The object detection and classification model achieved an overall accuracy >80% and F1 score ≥0.9 and saved 36.9 h of processing time. The automated distance estimation was fairly accurate, with a 1.1 m (±1.4 m) difference from manual distance estimates, and saved 16.8 h of processing time. Density estimates did not differ substantially between manual and automated distance estimation. Conclusions Machine learning models accurately processed camera videos, allowing efficient estimates of density from camera data. Implications Further adoption of motion-activated cameras coupled with automated processing could lead to continuous, large-scale monitoring of populations, helping to understand and address changes in biodiversity.

The status and conservation needs of the Micronesian Megapode (Megapodius laperouse laperouse) across the Mariana archipelago

Context Accurate baseline data for wildlife populations are important to track trends of these populations over time and to identify threats to their long-term persistence. Aims We aimed to assess the status and distribution of the little studied megapode ( Megapodius laperouse laperouse ) across the Mariana Islands. Methods Using passive and call playback facilitated surveys in 2008 through 2010, we employed point–transect distance sampling to assess island-level and archipelago-wide status of this megapode. To assess conservation needs, we defined human presence as the current, recent, or intermittent occurrence of humans on islands. Key results We recorded 657 megapode detections and estimated an archipelago level abundance of 11,542 individuals (95% CI: 5456–17,623) from 699 sampling points across 10 islands. Three islands supported 86% of the megapode population, but cumulatively comprise only 2% of the archipelago’s land area. Conclusions Micronesian Megapodes preferred native forest. Human presence and the availability of native forest may limit their abundance and distribution in the Mariana Islands. Although the probability of detecting megapodes was significantly greater on islands without high human presence, significantly more detections were recorded in forests with dense or closed understory on those islands that supported greater human populations. Implications Given their status and confined distribution in the Mariana Islands, additional studies investigating megapode incubation sites and movement within and between islands would provide fundamental information on megapode ecology and enhance conservation efforts. Continued and expanded ungulate removal, predator control, and habitat restoration would further enhance the likelihood of megapode persistence in the archipelago.

Skinks of Oceania, New Guinea, and Eastern Wallacea: An underexplored biodiversity hotspot

Context: Skinks comprise the dominant component of the terrestrial vertebrate fauna in Oceania, New Guinea, and Eastern Wallacea (ONGEW). However, knowledge of their diversity is incomplete, and their conservation needs are poorly understood. Aims: To explore the diversity and threat status of the skinks of ONGEW and identify knowledge gaps and conservation needs. Methods: We compiled a list of all skink species occurring in the region and their threat categories designated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. We used available genetic sequences deposited in the National Center for Biotechnology Information’s GenBank to generate a phylogeny of the region’s skinks. We then assessed their diversity within geographical sub-divisions and compared to other reptile taxa in the region. Key results: Approximately 300 species of skinks occur in ONGEW, making it the second largest global hotspot of skink diversity following Australia. Many phylogenetic relationships remain unresolved, and many species and genera are in need of taxonomic revision. One in five species are threatened with extinction, a higher proportion than almost all reptile families in the region. Conclusions: ONGEW contain a large proportion of global skink diversity on <1% of the Earth’s landmass. Many are endemic and face risks such as habitat loss and invasive predators. Yet, little is known about them, and many species require taxonomic revision and threat level re-assessment. Implications: The skinks of ONGEW are a diverse yet underexplored group of terrestrial vertebrates, with many species likely facing extreme risks in the near future. Further research is needed to understand the threats they face and how to protect them.
