Abstract

The suspended sediment discharge during this event was identified using NOAA-9 and NOAA-10 Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data from March 29 to April 14. The sediment plumes showed a westward movement upon reaching the Gulf of Maine. 105 metric tons of fine-grained sediments were carried onto the continental shelf in the largest plume, that from the Kennebec-Androscoggin river system. -from Authors

Decadal-scale characteristics of natural and anthropogenic dune morphology along North Carolina Barrier Islands (SE Atlantic Coast)

Dunes offer protection to coastal communities from storms, yet quantitative research characterizing human influences on dune systems across decades and 10–100 km spatial scales constitutes a known data gap. This study analyzed a multidecadal archive of dune crest elevations and positions to map mesoscale spatiotemporal trends in foredune morphology across the barrier island coastline of North Carolina, SE Atlantic coast. Results are summarized within four categories of coastline representing a range of coastal management intensities, integrating beach width and dune lateral accommodation space to assess the comparative influence of differing intensities of anthropogenic intervention on dune morphology. These categories account for the presence of structures, roads, and alongshore connectivity to anthropogenic sediment sources (beach nourishment). These categories show distinct dune and beach system characteristics. Dunes are largest in the areas with the longest legacy of coastal management. As categories decrease in development intensity, dune and beach system characteristics generally depart from the large, static dunes and narrow beaches consistent with hold-the-line management. Where small or transgressive dunes exist on heavily developed coasts, they coincide with relatively strong hydrodynamic forcing or sediment-limiting geology. There is evidence of indirect coastal management influence on undeveloped barrier islands with alongshore connectivity to developed barriers. While this analysis was conducted at the mesoscale, the results provide researchers with the framework to make insights at smaller scales than those demonstrated in this study.

Time-varying rates of organic and inorganic mass accumulation in southeast Louisiana marshes: Relationships to sea-level anomalies and tropical storms

Louisiana's coastal wetlands are complex systems that require a continuous input of organic and inorganic material to keep pace with relative sea-level rise. Coastal restoration projects such as sediment diversions are being implemented to mitigate land loss and increase availability of inorganic sediment to coastal wetlands, and marshes specifically rely on organic material to build soil volume and maintain surface elevation. Interannual-to-decadal sea-level anomalies such as hurricanes can affect marsh accretion, mineral deposition, and plant productivity. In this light, complex ecogeomorphic feedback controls whether a marsh surface is sustainable or eroded/drowns. This study performs some of the first differential vertical accretion rates (VARs) and organic and inorganic mass accumulation rates (MARs) over time in SE Louisiana marshes determined from the 210 Pb Constant Rate of Supply model, coupled with standard 137 Cs VARs. These accumulation rates over the past ∼100 years were measured from a total of six brackish and salt marsh locations in Barataria Basin near the proposed Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion. They were then related to interannual sea-surface elevations at Grand Isle, Louisiana, over the last ∼60 years and recorded hurricane activity in the delta. Results show VARs range from 0.63 cm/y to 1.69 cm/y and total MARs range from 0.11 to 0.43 g/cm 2 /y. Temporally, VARs and MARs (total, inorganic, and organic) are characterized by gradual increases in rates with decreasing age along with episodic peaks in VARs and MARs. The findings of this study indicate that no relationship occurs between sea-level anomalies and VARs or organic and inorganic MARs; however, a strong relationship appears to occur between major hurricanes to VAR and MAR contributions. Furthermore, high water content (81 ± 8%) and organic-rich soils in the sediment cores highlight the significance of belowground biomass and associated pore volume in maintaining marsh elevation in the study area.

Assessing decadal-scale coastal change likelihood to define the accuracy and application of scientific information

Defining the accuracy and uncertainties of scientific data products is critical to the usability and trustworthiness of scientific information for environmental management and conservation purposes, such as coastal resource prioritization, design, adaptation, and mitigation. The U.S. Geological Survey has a new decadal-scale coastal change assessment product that synthesizes nearly two dozen coastal datasets. A supervised machine-learning framework is used to combine existing datasets that describe the landscape and the hazards that affect it to determine the coastal change likelihood (CCL) in the coming decade at a resolution of 10 m per pixel for the NE United States from Maine to Virginia. Here, results from a series of statistical tests conducted on source data, the supervised classification, and the CCL outcomes as compared with historical land-cover change are presented. The overall accuracy of the aggregated land-cover dataset that serves as the foundation to which other source datasets are appended is 94%. The supervised learning classification that determines the final CCL output has an overall accuracy of 92%. The CCL predictions of high expected coastal change were consistent with 95% of the coastal and low-elevation landscape change in the last 20 years, as recorded by the Coastal Change Analysis Program land-cover change atlas. Results suggest that CCL provides accurate estimates of coastal landscape change in the next decade that are consistent with recent observed change. Additionally, best practices for applying CCL for planning purposes are outlined, and citing limitations, knowledge gaps, and opportunities for improved accuracy and further investigation are considered.
