Surface features of central North America: a synoptic view from computer graphics

Abstract

A digital shaded-relief image of the 48 contiguous United States shows the details of large- and small-scale landforms, including several linear trends. The features faithfully reflect tectonism, continental glaciation, fluvial activity, volcanism, and other surface-shaping events and processes. The new map not only depicts topography accurately and in its true complexity, but does so in one synoptic view that provides a regional context for geologic analysis unobscured by clouds, culture, vegetation, or artistic constraints. -Author

Insights into widespread landsliding in southern Appalachia from Hurricane Helene

Between 23 and 27 September 2024, antecedent rain followed by Hurricane Helene produced one of the most damaging weather events in southern Appalachia history. The back-to-back storm events resulted in a maximum cumulative rainfall of 848 mm and hurricane-force wind gusts over 170 km/h in western North Carolina, eastern Tennessee, and southwestern Virginia. The resulting regional flooding, landslides, and tree blowdown caused over 100 fatalities, damaged or destroyed critical infrastructure and thousands of structures, and severed connectivity across the region. Over the next several weeks, a multi-agency landslide response produced a rapid hazard assessment and mapped 2217 landslides, 55% of which damaged infrastructure or property. Orographic uplift enhanced rainfall, resulting in concentrated landsliding along the ~250 km swath of the Blue Ridge escarpment in western North Carolina. Landslides initiated predominantly on windward-facing (southeast-facing) slopes, and localized clustering of initiation points indicated a strong influence of hillslope-scale meteorological and geomorphic factors. Many shallow landslides mobilized into larger, highly mobile, and damaging debris flows that graded into floods. Here, we put our preliminary observations in the context of historical storm-driven landslide events and open new avenues for investigating the nature and extent of landslides and their effects in southern Appalachia and similar environments.

Forecast, monitor, adapt: A multi-agency strategy to protect people from postfire debris flows

In 2020, a wildfire burned across Glenwood Canyon in Colorado, USA. A history of postfire debris flows in the region and a hazard assessment for the burn area indicated that potentially life-threatening debris flows could be triggered by rainfall within months of a wildfire. As a result, four government agencies evaluated strategies to help mitigate hazards, including the loss of human life, that may be associated with debris-flow events. After the fire, 26 large debris flows occurred in the summer of 2021 and three sediment-laden flows occurred in the summer of 2023, but there were no major injuries or fatalities reported. We found that integrating hazard assessment/ forecasting, monitoring, and adaptation scenarios was a successful strategy for reducing postfire debris-flow risks to human life (including injuries and fatalities). Weather forecasts and estimates of debris-flow triggering rainfall thresholds, likelihood, and volume were used to anticipate the timing, location, and magnitude of debris-flow events. Rainfall monitoring and detailed recordkeeping of storms that triggered debris flows were used to validate and update debris-flow warning thresholds that varied with time following the wildfire. Although the governmental agencies working in this burn area had distinct and differing agency mandates, they were able to integrate information to reduce the risk of debris-flow events to human life.

Deep lithospheric controls on surface deformation and seismicity around the East Anatolian Fault Zone and A3 Triple Junction

The East Anatolian Fault Zone (EAFZ) is a plate-bounding strike-slip fault capable of hosting large earthquakes, as demonstrated by the extremely damaging February 2023 M w 7.8 and M w 7.7 mainshocks of the Kahramanmaraş earthquake sequence. Deformation related to this boundary, part of the Anatolia-Arabia-Africa (A 3 ) Triple Junction, is diffuse, as was shown by part of this earthquake sequence occurring on a northern splay of the EAFZ (the Sürgü-Çardak Fault Zone; SCFZ). Controls on surface deformation are commonly linked to stress in the brittle upper crust, but the complex deformation and seismicity patterns in this region may also reflect deeper processes, such as variations in the location and extent of the strong Arabian Plate lithospheric mantle. Seismic tomography indicates that the Arabian Plate underthrusts Anatolia as far north as the SCFZ and extends as far west as the central Adana Basin, coincident with a zone of relatively deep (>30 km) strike-slip seismogenesis that has produced M w >6 earthquakes. By investigating the relationship between deformation since the inception of the EAFZ (ca. 5 Ma), seismic structure, and seismicity, we infer that the SCFZ will become the future SE boundary of the Anatolian Plate as part of the evolving A 3 Triple Junction.
