Abstract

A simple, papillary cystic adenocarcinoma of the mammary gland with metastases to the internal iliac and mesenteric lymph nodes, liver, and spleen was observed in a 12 to 13 year old female black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes). Histologically, the tumor was aggressive, and lymphatic invasion was found. Attempts at virus isolation were negative. Other findings were bilateral infarcts in the kidneys, apparently resulting in acute renal shutdown and death, multiple thrombi in the right atrium, aortic arteriosclerosis, and focal interstitial pneumonia.

Further information on the avifauna of St. Matthew and Hall Islands, Bering Sea, Alaska

In June and July 2018 and July 2019 we surveyed birds on St. Matthew and Hall islands, isolated in the central Bering Sea. Our surveys were focused on the McKay’s Bunting (Plectrophenax hyperboreus), Rock Sandpiper (Calidris ptilocnemis ptilocnemis), and Pelagic Cormorant (Phalacrocorax pelagicus) but encompassed all birds and yielded 13 species and four subspecies new to the islands’ avifaunal list, and new details and documentation of breeding for eight species. Especially notable discoveries include a mixed pair of Bewick’s (Cygnus columbianus bewickii) and Whistling (C. c. columbianus) Swans, a mixed pair of the Glaucous-winged (Larus glaucescens) and an Asian subspecies of the Herring Gull (L. argentatus vegae), and discovery of a colony of ~100 pairs of the Red-legged Kittiwake (Rissa brevirostris). Also, contrary to many previous expeditions, we found the Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch (Leucosticte tephrocotis umbrina) to be common and conclude that it may be resident.

First record of the common sandpiper for the Hawaiian Islands

With a breeding range spanning Eurasia and a winter range extending from Africa to Australasia, the Common Sandpiper ( Actitis hypoleucos ) is indeed the common and familiar sandpiper of the Old World. It is the Old World counterpart of the Spotted Sandpiper ( A. macularius ) of the Americas and its only congener. The Spotted Sandpiper is a vagrant to the Hawaiian Islands (David 1991, Pyle and Pyle 2009), but no Common Sandpiper had been reported until one spent the winter of 2010–2011 at Honuapo lagoon, Whittington Beach County Park, Hawaii Island. Previously, Pyle and Pyle (2009) summarized all records of Actitis for the islands and concluded that 21 of the 32 could be identified with certainty as Spotted Sandpipers. Among the remaining 11 records, the Common Sandpiper could not be ruled out. The Common Sandpiper is a possibility because it reaches Micronesia as a regular winter visitor (Baker 1951) and western Polynesia and Alaska as a vagrant (Kessel and Gibson 1978, Pratt et al. 1987, Gibson and Byrd 2007). There are no records elsewhere in North America (Howell et al. 2014).

Golden Eagle mortality at a utility-scale wind energy facility near Palm Springs, California

Golden Eagle ( Aquila chrysaetos ) mortality associated with wind energy turbines and infrastructure is under-reported and weakly substantiated in the published literature. I report two cases of mortality at a utility-scale renewable energy facility near Palm Springs, California. The facility has been in operation since 1984 and included 460 65KW turbines mounted on 24.4 m or 42.7 m lattice-style towers with 8 m rotor diameters. One mortality event involved a juvenile eagle that was struck and killed by a spinning turbine blade on 31 August, 1995. The tower was 24.4 m high. The other involved an immature female that was struck by a spinning blade on another 24.4 m tower on 17 April, 1997 and was later euthanized due to the extent of internal injuries. Other raptor mortalities incidentally observed at the site, and likely attributable to turbines, included three Red-tailed Hawks ( Buteo jamaicensis ) found near turbines.
