South Carolina seismic program

The principal objectives of the South Carolina Seismic Program are to: (1) provide essential high-quality raw seismic data for earthquakes in South Carolina; (2) compute accurate estimates of event and source parameters; (3) provide a catalog of events and source parameters that will be used in further evaluation of seismic hazard; and (4) respond with rapid estimates of event parameters if a large event occurs within South Carolina during the duration of the program.

A geologic and geophysical study of the Charleston, South Carolina, earthquake zone

A maximum Modified Mercalli intensity of X was reported in Charleston. Damage to buildings was extensive, railroads were made impassable, and communications were disrupted. During the earthquake 27 people were killed, and 56 later died as a result of exposure and injuries sustained during the shaking. The earthquake was reported felt as far as New England, Wisconsin, and Missouri, an area of 5 million square kilometres.

Water resources data for South Carolina, water year 1971

Water resources data for the 1971 water year for South Carolina including records of streamflow or reservoir storage at gaging stations, records of water-quality data on the chemical and physical characteristics of surface water and ground water levels are given in this report. Records for a few pertinent gaging and water-quality stations in the State of Georgia are also included. The records were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey under the direction of J. S. Stallings, district chief. These data represent that portion of the National Water Data System collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in South Carolina.

A repellent for protecting corn seed from blackbirds and crows

Methiocarb [4-(methylthio)-3,-5-xylyl N-methylcarbamate] was tested as a seed treatment for repelling blackbirds and crows ( Corvus sp.) from sprouting corn in South Carolina. The test was conducted on eight fields within a 0.25-square-mile area. Marked repellency occurred; sprout damage averaged 44 percent in the control fields and 0.3 percent in the fields treated with methiocarb.

Tracer simulation study of potential solute movement in Port Royal Sound, South Carolina

A tracer study was conducted in Port Royal Sound to simulate the movement and ultimate pattern of concentration of a solute continuously injected into the flow. A total of 750 pounds of Rhodamine WT dye was injected by boat during a period of 24.8 hours in a line across the Colleton River. During the following 43 days, samples of water were taken at selected points in the sound, and the concentration of dye in the samples was determined by fluorometric analysis. The data obtained in the field study were used with theoretical models to compute the ultimate pattern of concentration of nonconservative and conservative solutes for a hypothetical continuous injection at the site on the Colleton River.

Immunologic status of mourning doves following an epizootic of trichomoniasis

An epizootic of trichomoniasis in mourning doves at the Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge began in 1969 and continued into 1970. The disease was seen in 16% of the adults and 2% of the immatures in 1970, but only one immature bird out of 37 surveyed (3%) carried Trichomonas gallinae . Challenge infection of 33 doves from the epizootic area showed 85 percent to be resistant to trichomoniasis, compared to 69 percent resistance in doves from Maryland, where no epizootic has occurred for at least 3 years. Plasma protein changes which occurred following challenge infection were identical in CSNWR and Maryland doves which showed evidence of disease. Of the doves which showed no signs of disease, those from the CSNWR exhibited no change in beta globulins, identical to the response in pigeons which survive an infection by T. gallinae , but they had some tissue invasion by the parasite.

A proposed streamflow data program for South Carolina

An evaluation of the available streamflow data in South Carolina was made to provide guidelines for planning future surface-water data programs. The basic elements in the evaluation procedure were (1) establishment of objectives and goals of the program, (2) examination and analysis of all available data to determine which goals have already been met, (3) consideration of alternate methods of meeting the remaining goals, and (4) identification of elements that should be included in the future program. Four categories of data form the framework of program design. They are: current-purpose data, planning and design data, data to define long-term trends, and stream environment data. An accuracy goal for planning and design data of an equivalent of 25 years of record was specified for principal streams and an equivalent of 10 years of record was specified for minor streams. It was found that many of the goals could be met by generalizing data for gaged basins by regression analysis. Appropriate changes could be made in the present data program based on this fact. A streamflow data program based on the guidelines developed in this study is proposed for the future.

A fossil assemblage from the wicomico formation in Berkeley County, South Carolina

Both megafossils and fossil Foraminifera have been obtained from unconsolidated sediments of the Wicomico Formation , which underlies the Penholoway terrace, a coastal feature that formed when the shoreline of the Atlantic Ocean stood about 70 feet higher than at present. Some of the fossils are Tertiary species and are assumed to have been derived from rocks of that age; the others are species commonly found in near-shore deposits of Quaternary age as well as in present-day south -Atlantic coastal waters. The Penholoway terrace in this area is shown to have been formed during a pause in marine regression from the Wicomico stand, when the sea stood near 100 feet. The relation of the Wicomico and Penholoway terraces to other coastal terraces suggests a Yarmouth age for the fossil -yielding beds.
