There were no major earthquakes during the first 2 months of the year and there were no earthquake-related deaths reported during this same time period. In the United States a moderate earthquake on February 28 in southern California caused some minor injuries and considerable damage.

The first major earthquake (7.0-7.9) of the year hit Mexico on April 25, killing three people and causing some damage. Earthquake-related deaths were also reported from Malawi, China, and New Britain. In the United States minor damage was reported from both central and southern California and from Puerto Rico.

There was one major earthquake (7.0-7.9) during this reporting period. This quake was located near the coast of northern Chile and had a magnitude of 7.3. Destructive earthquakes also struck Ecuador, Japan, Indonesia and New Zealand. There were no damaging earthquakes in the United States during this period.

Earthquake-related deaths were reported from a magnitude 5.8 quake in India. There was no significant damage from earthquakes in the United States.

Earthquake-related deaths were also reported from the Philippine Islands, Bolivia, and China. In the United States a strong earthquake occurred in Alaska on March 9 and a magntidue 6.3 earthquake occurred off the coast of Oregon on March 13.
