Ecological resource management: A call to arms
As the human population enlarges, it becomes increasingly difficult to sus tain valued ecological resources. Hu man use of resources, whether it is t h e harvest of ocean fisheries, logging of forests, or farming of arable lands, has resulted in significant population de clines i n many wildlife species. The growth of urban areas and the exp ansion of impermeable surfaces alter landscape diversity and modify hydro logic patterns in ways that decrease habitat quality for many desired plant, fish, and wildlife species. Impaired wa ter, air, and soil quality related to in dustrial, municipal, and agricultural ac tivities have altered the composition of aquatic and terrestrial communities.
