Arsenic, nitrate, iron, and hardness in ground water, Fairbanks area, Alaska

Well water with concentrations of arsenic and nitrate exceeding U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards occurs sporadically throughout the hills north of Fairbanks, Alaska. The arsenic contamination has not been correlated with placer or other mining activity. The high levels of nitrate do not generally appear related to septic waste contamination. Few wells in the Fairbanks area yield water with low concentrations of iron or low hardness. Iron concentrations are consistently greater than 3 mg/L on the flood plain. In the uplands, concentrations of both iron and hardness are lowest near the ridgetops and increase downslope. The report includes a map of the area showing the location of sampled wells and a table of chemical analysis. (Woodard-USGS)

Hydrogeologic data for the Eagle River-Chugiak area, Alaska

Water for the Eagle River-Chugiak area is provided by private, subdivision and trailer court wells. Data from these wells were stud- ied to determine aquifer materials, yield, well depth and depth to water. The aquifer material is unconsolidated glacial or alluvial gravel and sand and bedrock from the McHugh Complex, the unnamed metamorphic complex and the Kenai Formation. The median well yield for bedrock wells is 2 gallons per minute and the median well yield for wells completed in unconsolidated aquifers is 10 gallons per minute. Well depths may vary widely where wells are drilled into bedrock or glacial till but are more uniform where wells are drilled into alluvial gravels and sand. A continuous water table is not defined in the Eagle River-Chugiak area.
