The National Water Data Exchange (NAWDEX) was established by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1976. Its program is directed toward improving the exchange of water and water -related data collected and made available by hundreds of federal and non-federal agencies throughout the United States. This paper describes the NAWDEX program and the services which can be provided to assist coastal and estuarine programs.
The Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey began the design and development of a National Water Information System (NWIS) in 1983. The NWIS will replace and integrate the existing data systems of the National Water Data Storage and Retrieval System, National Water Data Exchange, National Water-Use Information Program, and Water Resources Scientific Information Center. The NWIS has been designed as an interactive, distributed data system. The software system has been designed in a modular manner which integrates existing software functions and allows multiple use of software modules. The data base has been designed as a relational data model that allows integrated storage of the existing water data, water-use data, and water-data indexing information by using a common relational data base management system. The NWIS will be operated on microcomputers located in each of the Water Resources Division's District offices and many of its State, subdistrict, and field offices. The microcomputers will be linked together through a national telecommunication network maintained by the U. S. Geological Survey. The NWIS is scheduled to be placed in operation in 1990.
National Water Information System (NWIS) has been designed as an interactive, distributed data system. It will integrate the existing, diverse data-processing systems into a common system. It will also provide easier, more flexible use as well as more convenient access and expanded computing, dissemination, and data-analysis capabilities. The NWIS is being implemented as part of a Distributed Information System (DIS) being developed by the Survey's Water Resources Division. The NWIS will be implemented on each node of the distributed network for the local processing, storage, and dissemination of hydrologic data collected within the node's area of responsibility. The processor at each node will also be used to perform hydrologic modeling, statistical data analysis, text editing, and some administrative work.
This report contains codes for the identification of public and private organizations listed in computerized data systems. These codes are used by the U.S. Geological Survey 's National Water Data Exchange (NAWDEX), National Water Data Storage and Retrieval System (WATSTORE), National Cartographic Information Center (NCIC), Office of Water Data Coordination (OWDC). The format structure of the codes is discussed and instructions are given for requesting new codes. (USGS)
This report contains a definition and description of each component of the Water Data Sources Directory data base maintained by the National Water Data Exchange (NAWDEX). It is intended, primarily, to assist those persons using the Water Data Sources Directory in understanding information obtained from the data base. The Water Data Sources Directory is a computerized data base maintained and operated using the System 2000 data base management system. It contains information about organizations that collect, store, and disseminate water data. (USGS)

The National Water Data Exchange (NAWDEX), managed by the U.S. Geological Survey, has established a network of Assistance Centers throughout the United States and Puerto Rico to assist users of water data in identifying and locating the data they need. This Directory provides the information needed to contact any of the established Centers.
The National Water Data Exchange (NAWDES) is a nationwide program managed by the U.S. Geological Survey to assist users of water data and water-related data in identifying, locating, and acquiring needed data. NAWDEX services are available through a program office located in the Geological Survey 's National Center in Reston, Va., and a network of assistance centers established in 45 States and in Puerto Rico to provide local and convenient access to NAWDEX facilities. This manual presents operational guidelines for the operation of these assistance centers to accomplish the expeditious flow of data from holder to user. These guidelines will be occasionally modified and supplemented to accommodate new concepts and techniques that may be needed. (USGS)
This manual contains instructions for the registration of organizations in the Water Data Sources Directory of the National Water Data Exchange (NAWDEX). The Directory contains information pertinent to organizations that are collectors and sources of water data, major sources of water data collected by other organizations, major users of water data made available by other organizations, or active in programs related to water resources. Detailed instructions are presented for the encoding of forms required for registration of an organization in the Directory.
The Master Water Data Index (MWDI) of the U.S. Geological Survey's National Water Data Exchange (NAWDEX) is a computerized data base which contains information about water data collected at specific sites. The data base identifies the organization collecting the data, the site location, the major types of data collected, the period of collection, and the frequency of measurement of major parameters for each type of data. This manual contains instructions for the encoding and keypunching of information for entry into the MWDI.

The National Water Data Exchange (NAWDEX) is a national confederation of water-oriented organizations working together to improve access to water data. It consists of member organizations from all sectors of the water-data community. This Directory provides the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of all NAWDEX member organizations and their designated NAWDEX representatives. (Woodard-USGS)
This report describes the activities of the National Water Data Exchange (NAWDEX) during Fiscal Year 1978, October 1, 1977 through September 30, 1978. Discussions include program administration, NAWDEX services, identification of sources of water data, indexing of available water data, development of systems to be used with the NAWDEX data bases, Water Data Sources Directory, and Master Water Data Index.
