Water quality in the upper Tennessee River basin, Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia 1994-98

This report summarizes major findings about water quality in the upper Tennessee River basin that emerged from an assessment conducted between 1994 and 1998 by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program. Water quality is discussed in terms of local and regional issues and compared to conditions found in all 36 NAWQA study areas, called study units, assessed to date. Findings are also explained in the context of selected national benchmarks, such as those for drinking-water quality and the protection of aquatic organisms. Finally, this report includes information about the status of aquatic communities and the condition of in-stream habitats as elements of a complete water-quality assessment.

Conversion of geologic quadrangle maps to geologic coverages

Three hundred sixty-eight geologic map$ of 7-1/2 minute quadrangles in Tennessee were coverted to geographic information system (GIS) coverages. The procedure used was documented and a list was made of the quadrangles included in the coverages. Maps were converted to GIS coverages by making film copies of scribecoats of the maps. The film copies were scanned, vectorized, and written into a generate format. Coverage polygons were tagged with symbels to identify geologic units, and coverage lines were tagged with line types to designate stratigraphic contacts.

Low flows during the 1988 drought in Tennessee

A severe drought occurred across large areas of Tennessee during the summer of 1988. Rainfall totaled 39.4 inches in 1988 and was 8.8 inches below the 1951-80 normal of 48.2 inches. An intensive streamflow measurement program was begun in July 1988. Minimum flows measured in summer 1988 were shown along the 3-day 20-year recurrence-interval minimum flow at selected sites throughout Tennessee. Specific conductance and water temperature data collected at the measurement sites are presented. (USGS)
