As the Nation's principal earth-science information agency, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is depended upon to collect data of the highest quality. This document provides the framework for collecting, analyzing and reporting ground-water data that are quality assured and quality controlled.
A sanitary landfill used in Anchorage, Alaska, since the 1940 's was closed in 1987. Leachate from the landfill does not appear to be contaminating a small creek flowing through a conduit in the landfill, but leachate is being transported by groundwater into a wetlands to the south. An electromagnetic survey of the unconfined aquifer and subsequent sampling from wells indicate that minor amounts of contaminants have reached much of the wetlands as far as Chester Creek, about 2,200 ft to the south. However, concentrations of these contaminants in the groundwater are generally less than U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards for drinking water except within the landfill itself. (USGS)
Groundwater level data in Alaska are summarized for the 1983 water year for observation wells at which levels are either recorded continuously or measured intermittently. For wells at which water levels are measured semi-annually, 10-year summaries are presented. Water levels for 153 observation wells are shown on graphs and locations of the wells are shown on accompanying maps. The following information is given for each well: location , owner, type of aquifer, depth and casing information, type of measurement, altitude datum, period of record, and extremes for the period.
