Measurement of reaeration coefficients for selected Florida streams

A total of 29 separate reaeration coefficient determinations were performed on 27 subreaches of 12 selected Florida streams between October 1981 and May 1985. Measurements performed prior to June 1984 were made using the peak and area methods with ethylene and propane as the tracer gases. Later measurements utilized the steady-state method with propane as the only tracer gas. The reaeration coefficients ranged from 1.07 to 45.9 days with a mean estimated probable error of +/16.7%. Ten predictive equations (compiled from the literature) were also evaluated using the measured coefficients. The most representative equation was one of the energy dissipation type with a standard error of 60.3%. Seven of the 10 predictive additional equations were modified using the measured coefficients and nonlinear regression techniques. The most accurate of the developed equations was also of the energy dissipation form and had a standard error of 54.9%. For 5 of the 13 subreaches in which both ethylene and propane were used, the ethylene data resulted in substantially larger reaeration coefficient values which were rejected. In these reaches, ethylene concentrations were probably significantly affected by one or more electrophilic addition reactions known to occur in aqueous media. (Author 's abstract)

Water-Resources Investigations Report

Evaluation of the surface-water data network, Suwannee River basin, Florida, 1982

In the 9,950 square mile area of the Suwannee River basin in Florida and Georgia, a network of 33 surface-water gaging stations operated for different periods of time from 1927 to 1982 was evaluated for its capability to provide program information for floodplain mapping, floodplain management, forecasting of flow extremes, and defining the impact of changes in land use on surface-water quantity and quality. Gaging stations are classified based on the type of data and number of years record as current use, long-term trend, and planning and design. Goals are established for each classification. Suggestions for program revisions include establishing crest-stage gages for high-flow and flood-profile data, defining and establishing a low-flow network, and establishing two and discontinuing one daily discharge station. Water-Resources Investigations Report

Quality of surface water at selected sites in the Suwannee River basin, Florida

This report presents the results of analyses of water-quality samples collected from 14 surface-water sites in the Suwannee River basin in Florida from January through December 1980. The analyses of samples collected routinely included: nutrients, total organic carbon, and 5-day biochemical oxygen demand, bimonthly; and trace metals, annually. The array of constituents sampled was expanded in October 1978 at three of the original nine stations to provide quality-of-water information for streams draining an industrial area: Rocky Creek near Belmont, Hunter Creek near Belmont, and Swift Creek at Facil. Data collected at these three sites now include: major chemical constituents, six times per year: radium-226, two times per year; and trace metals, one time per year. These constituents are determined in addition to nutrients, total organic carbon, and bio-chemical oxygen demand which continue to be analyzed six times per year. All results of analyses of the water-quality samples collected from January through December 1980 remained within, or near, previously measured ranges and water-quality fluctuations were similar to those noted from data collected since 1971. Summary of ground-water and surface-water data for city of Pensacola and Escambia County, Florida

Hydrologic, geologic, and water-quality data collected in Escambia County, Florida, October 1962 through September 1980 are presented. The data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey as part of a cooperative investigation with the city of Pensacola and Escambia County to provide information on the quality and quantity of water available from the sand-and-gravel aquifer and selected surface-water sites in Escambia County. Ground-water data include records of 440 wells, chemical and physical analyses of water quality for 325 wells, 6 long-term hydrographs, and 19 lithologic logs. Surface-water data include streamflow measurements and analyses of water collected at 9 sites. Maps of the county show the locations of the data-collection sites. (USGS)
