Catalog of seismograph stations operated in support of the ERDA Nevada Operations Office, January 1964 thru June 1976

The seismograph stations listed in this catalog were established over the period January 1964 through June 1976 in support of the Energy Research and Development Administration, Nevada (ERDA/NV) underground weapons testing program at the Nevada Test Site (NTS), central Nevada, and Amchitka, Alaska. For station listings before 1964 see Coast and Geodetic Survey publication, "Seismic Data Summary Nuclear Detonation Program 1961 through 1963", by W. V. Mickey and T. R. Shugart, January 1964. Coordinates of stations instrumented for ERDA's Industrial Application Division (IAD, Plowshare) events are published in separate reports (Appendix A, page 66). In addition to the stations for monitoring the testing program, other stations established for specific seismicity studies, such as the Aleutian Seismicity Network, are also listed.

Open-File Report

Seismicity of the Pahute Mesa area, Nevada Test Site: 8 October 1975 to 30 June 1976

A total of 1,075 earthquakes occurred in the Pahute Mesa area with 2.5≤M L ≤4.9 during the period October 28, 1975, to June 28, 1976. The majority of these earthquakes are aftershocks of the nuclear events, Kasseri, Inlet, Muenster, Fontina, Cheshire, Estuary, Colby, and Pool (5.8≤M L ≤6.3). Smaller nuclear events (M L ≤5.5) on Rainier Mesa and Yucca Flat detonated in the same time period did not trigger aftershock sequences. The aftershock series were displaced laterally from ground zero and occurred deeper (at 4–6 km) than the nuclear even depth of burial (~1 km). The aftershocks appear to occur on vertical faults with approximately north-south strike.

Seismic investigations in Wyoming as part of the Wagon Wheel definition studies

As part of the Wagon Wheel definition studies, seismic investigations were conducted in Wyoming by personnel of the United States Geological Survey, Las Vegas, Nevada. From March 22, 1973 to February 22, 1974, a seismograph station recorded seismic activity at five different areas in the vicinity of the proposed Project Wagon Wheel location in the Green River basin of Wyoming. The short period vertical component station, located near and around ground zero (GZ) operated for approximately two months at each of five locations at distances from 3 to 21 km from GZ. One hundred and twenty nine (129) natural and man -made events identifiable as located within a radius of 100 km from the station were recorded during tile eleven-month study. Calculated magnitudes ranged from M L - 0. 6 toM L 2.6.
