Floods in the Nishnabotna River basin, Iowa

Flood-elevation profiles and flood-peak discharges for floods during 1972, 1982, and 1987 in the Nishnabotna River basin are given in this report. The profiles are for the 1972 flood on the West and East Nishnabotna Rivers, the 1982 flood on Indian Creek, and the 1987 flood on the lower West Nishnabotna River. A flood history describes rainfall conditions and reported damages for floods occurring during 1947,1958,1972,1982, and 1987. Discharge for the 1982 flood on Indian Creek is 1.1 times larger than the 100-year recurrence interval discharge.

Discharge ratings for control gates at Mississippi River Lock and Dam 18, Gladstone, Illinois

The water level of the navigation pools on the Mississippi River are maintained by the operation of tainter and roller gates at the locks and dams. Discharge ratings for the gates on Lock and Dam 18, at Gladstone, Illinois, were developed from current meter discharge measurements made in the forebays of the gate structures. Methodology is given to accurately compute the gate openings of the tainter gate. Discharge coefficients, in equations that express discharge as a function of tailwater head , forebay head, and height of gate opening, were determined for conditions of submerged-orifice and free-weir flow. A comparison of the rating discharges with the hydraulic model rating discharges is given for submerged orifice flow for the tainter and roller gates.

Discharge ratings for control gates at Mississippi River lock and dam 20, Canton, Missouri

The water levels of the navigation pools on the Mississippi River are maintained by the operation of tainter and roller gates at the locks and dams. Discharge ratings for the gates on Lock and Dam 20, at Canton, Missouri, were developed from current meter discharge measurements made in the forebays of the gate structures. Methodology is given to compute accurately the gate openings of the tainter gates. Discharge coefficients, in equations that express discharge as a function of tailwater head , forebay head, and height of gate opening, were determined for conditions of submerged orifice flow. A comparison of the discharges defined by the hydraulic model ratings and those computed by the equations developed in this study are given for selected gate openings. (Author 's abstract)

Discharge ratings for control gates at Mississippi River lock and dam 21, Quincy, Illinois

The water levels of the navigation pools on the Mississippi River are maintained by the operation of tainter and roller gates at the locks and dams. Discharge ratings for the gates on Lock and Dam 21, at Quincy, Illinois, were developed from current meter discharge measurements made in the forebays of the gate structures. Methodology is given to compute the gate openings of the tainter gates accurately. Discharge coefficients , in equations that express discharge as a function of tailwater head, forebay head, and height of gate opening, were determined for conditions of submerged orifice and free weir flow. A comparison of the rating discharges to the hydraulic model rating discharges is given for submerged orifice flow for the tainter and roller gates.

Floods of June-July 1982, in Iowa

Record flood-peak discharges occurred in June and July, 1982, in southwestern, south-central, and east-central Iowa. The record flood peaks resulted from rainfalls of 6 to 8 inches on soil saturated from persistent moderate to heavy rainfalls that began in May and continued through mid July. May was the wettest across Iowa since 1959, averaging just over 7 inches statewide to rank as Iowa's 6th wettest May in 100 years of State records. Statewide rainfall for July averaged in excess of 6 inches to rank among the 3rd wettest July in Iowa since 1958. One of the greatest floods ever recorded in the State occurred on Cedar Creek in south-central Iowa on July 3, 1982. The flood peak discharge at the gaging station near Bussey (05489000) was 4.4 times that of a regional 100-year flood. The gage height exceeded the record flood stage of July 4, 1981, by 5.78 feet. Flood peak discharges on other streams ranged up to 2.7 times that of a regional 100-year flood.

Floods in the Floyd River basin, Iowa

Flood elevation profiles and flood peak discharges for the floods of 1953, 1962, 1973, and 1983 in the Floyd River basin are given in this report. The profiles cover the Floyd and West Branch Floyd Rivers. The 1953 flood is the greatest known on the Floyd River since at least 1892.

Discharge ratings for control gates at Mississippi River Lock and Dam 11, Dubuque, Iowa

The water level of the navigation pools on the Mississippi River are maintained by the operation of tainter and roller gates at locks and dams. Discharge ratings for the gates on Lock and Dam 11, Dubuque, Iowa, were developed from current-meter discharge measurements made in the forebays. Methodology is given to accurately compute the vertical gate openings of the tainter gates. Discharge coeffients, in equations that express discharge as a function of tailwater depth, headwater depth, and vertical height of gate opening, were determined for conditions of submerged-orifice and free-weir flow. A comparison of the rating discharges to the theoretical rating discharges is given for submerged orifice flow for the tainter and roller gates.
